Remembering when:

Thinking back to my very first job, believe I was 15 or 16 , I was a dishwasher for a local five star Italian restaurant. It was a very high paced job, always running back n forth from the kitchen to the industrial grade dishwasher in the back. It was hot all of the time and the floors were dangerously slippery. During any lulls, the owner would have me start making the sauce, amongst plenty of other tasks to keep me busy.

Two years go by and I find myself at a prominent landscape company in the big city! Started with grass cutting, edging, pulling weeds from gardens, and using a “Billygoat”, no not the animal, an outside vacuum that sucked up all of the dirt and leaves from the ground. Then, gradually learned the art of hedging, planting, laying sod, creating rock gardens, and even worked with a landscape architect, manifesting their drawings into reality. The owner‘s clients were some of the wealthiest people in the city. It was very physical work but also very rewarding in the end.

After seven years doing landscaping, I entered into the wide world of telecommunications. It was quite a shock, to be honest, coming from working outside all day to being confined indoors. From setting up the iron racks, running tons of cables through walls and ceilings, installing very sophisticated telecom equipment, hard wiring thousands of wires, and conducting the final tests on all of it. Not to mention , installing the DC power equipment and back up battery systems to make everything run smooth. I experienced all of the ‘behind the scenes’ secrets that made communication possible! Changed my life forever and has given me a 23 year career.

Well, this was only a fraction of the jobs I’ve had but I wanted keep this short n sweet.

Late one evening as I was cleaning up the kitchen, I smiled, reminiscing about my first job as a teen. It seems that every job I’ve ever had, has made an impact on me as an adult. Every time I wash a dish, plant a shrub, or do any DIY wiring in my house, I can’t help but be inspired by all I’ve done and how it has affected my life every day. Truly remarkable I must say.
