Battling Resistance Part Three

In Battling Resistance Part Two we talked about doing the smallest amount or unit. In the third part of this series, we are going to look into what to do if you cannot even do the smallest amount.

If you cannot beat them, join them!

So if the resistance or inertia you are feeling stop you from even doing the tiniest or smallest amount of something, what could possibly work to battle your resistance. What can you do when resistance is at its strongest for the smallest possible amount of work?

At least you shouldn't go off to the fridge and go for comfort food. Neither do you go for the sweets cupboard ;-).

You don't declare defeat! No, instead you have to declare your refusal to do anything at all today. Even better, you got to say it out loud to yourself!

Say:

I refuse to do this today!

Perhaps this sounds very stupid, but it is going to save your dreams. Why?

Because you made the choice yourself and made a decision. It is a choice with a lot of positive energy, not one of negativity and defeat. You show yourself that YOU are in charge. Nobody else! You haven't dropped the whole idea of doing the thing you wanted to do, but you simply won't do it this time around.

Can't do it the next day? Not a problem, just declare it again to yourself!

I refuse to do this today!

Anytime you cannot do the smallest amount of a task, you have to declare refusal, not defeat.

Has Resistance Won?

Resistance didn't win, because you took charge of the situation. Resistance hasn't lost yet either, but neither have you. The fact that you chose to do nothing at all, does make a world of difference. You took control, you are in charge.

I have used this a lot in coaching. I made decisions on how to deal with situations. I made decisions on how to create day shifts, build priority lists etc and create some homework. But I also had to sometimes make the decision to do nothing at all. And it worked miraculously! It is a great feeling to feel to be in charge.

The most important thing is that you are in charge, on whatever you want to happen next.

Since you created the task of not doing anything at all, resistance will figure out it has no danger to fight and return to slumber. After enough days of declaring to not do anything at all, one morning you will wake up and start doing what you dreaded earlier without any problem.

Steven

that is the way

Love your approach, give me a lot to think about, thank you.

Glad to make you think and wonder. Also great to help you out.

Taking charge.... I like it...Thanks Steven.

I will have to look at battling resistance from a different angle now ... take charge and declare 'I refuse to do this today' Thanks, Steven :)

It's an awesome method! And it works. Taking control is very important to anyone.

Putting it off with determination can store potential energy that will blast to success when you really accelerate!

Indeed, that must be the power behind it.
