Hello, is there a golden rule for how many words you should use when writing an article? Is there a minimum or maximum? What is the target we should aim for?

One thing is for certain and that is that Google will not highly rank content that is considered "thin content" or content of 500 words or less.

However Google does highly rank content that is "long form" content at 2000 words and up. With Google and the other search engines, the more content the better.

As the search engines become smarter and more content aware, I would aim to have your content quite high in terms of words.

In excess of 700 certainly but aiming for higher wont hurt as long as it all relevant content, not spun content by software and get your points across.

Breaking up the content is a must as you will be aiming high levels of words.

Good headings, short paragraphs and related images either right justified or centered should do the trick perfectly!

Maybe try and stay within the 700- 1000+ mixing it up a little will b e fine. There maybe some things you write that does the job in 700 words, where something more in depth like a training article may need closer to 1000+

There is no answer to that one.
The post should be as long as needed to present your story. As long as it interesting and reader friendly just keep writing until you're done.

However, there is research that says that 650 to 700 words it the limit of the attention span of the average reader. But then again there are others who claim that this is not so.

With analytics on your website you can track how long people stay on each page. That will give you an idea if the run off before they are done reading.

Just find your own length, and make it suit your subject.

Thanks for your response!

Hi, Stepgreen29. There is no true rule about the amount of words. The sweet spot is 500 words or more and try to manage more than 300 words you are then in the ballpark. If you need any assistance just contact us.

I would definitely say over 1000 minimum. I have heard that some of the posts at the top of rankings are 2500 plus, so even with 1000, it may be difficult. I'm only now getting to 1000 myself.

Thanks for the feedback! I was trying to think about how many words do I read before leaving a post but it just depend on the content. If I find it in the beginning I will stop reading but if it's more in step form I normally will read the entire articles.

I think the main thing is how to make your content easily readable. If it's easy to read and interesting, they will read on.

For example, you could start breaking it into smaller easy to read chunks.

A bit like this so the eye doesn't get confused. Then sprinkle images around to illustrate your content.

Use clear headings, and draw the readers attention through your post.

Hope this helps.

It does! Do you normally stick to one keyword in a post or do you try to incorporate more?

Choose your keyword using the low hanging fruit principle, and only use that one intentionally. You can possibly rank for other keywords also, but let the search engines figure that out.

So, if I chose, I dunno, top yoghurt makers for under £40, I would put that in my post title, and once in the first couple of paragraphs. Do it as naturally as possible and never lose sight of the fact you are talking to people and not the crawler.

Wow. When you write this stuff down it sounds so simple, doesn't it?

Yes it does until you are writing your articles and you get those ah ha moments. Thanks

You are very welcome :)
