Don't Comment Unless You Know The Answer!
Is this an inviting intro when you're seeking help? Does it make you want to offer your valuable time when you do know the answer? What about indexing? Does it create an atmosphere that would encourage others to join WA?
For myself not so much. Thoughts? All comments are welcome. :)

A neutral style comment is not as bad as a question that is not correctly formulated to let everyone know what is being asked in the first place. And there are also those posts that require no comment.
I think they might be trying to deter the people that say something like, "I don't know" or "not sure".
However, if people say "I don't know, but I'm interested in finding out as well" that at leasts people know that you are just wanting to follow the conversation instead of just posting a comment for the sake of posting a comment.
It doesn't really put me off from answering if I feel like I have something to contribute to the conversation or I can ask a clarifying question to help myself and others answer the question more accurately.
Another good point. There is a lot of commenting that goes on for a like and a rank improvement.
I get the frustration that would lead to such a post intro. I just try hard to look past the nonsense comments. If someone is unfriendly or hostile you can always unfollow. Otherwise I feel my frustration is deterring comments that may be helpful.
Not trying to put any one person on the spot. I'm sure there's been times my frustration has led to univiting posts and/or comments.
It does feel like a put-off. I sometime will leave a comment if I don't know the answer, because it seems quite a few people here do not realize the wealth of archived blogs and trainings available to get the answers they need. So I suggest they ask the related question in the query bar at the top of the page, where they most likely will get the help they need.
I comment if it's a question I would also like to know the answer to or if I do know the answer I like to share it with others!
The intro you used isn't very welcoming and I find some questions are like this. It doesn't create a welcoming environment rather your opinion doesn't matter unless you are right!
It's a good point about wanting to know the answer. If you comment, you'll get notifications of future answers.
Even the questions I ask. If I search around Incould most likely find the answer myself but I am sure there is more then me wondering the same thing so I ask the question for everyone's advantage.
And your right the notification helps to go back and find the answer!
I get what you are saying. When some says "Don't comment unless you know the answer" they are deterring those from commenting who DO know the answer.

I was actually, joking, (notice the smiley face), but since you're looking for serious answers...
When I see the phrase "Don't Comment Unless You Know The Answer", I tend to take it at face value. That is, if I don't know the answer, I don't leave a comment just to be humorous as I did here in my previous comment and on other member's posts.
Some take IM very serious and would rather not engage socially at WA, whereas other members like the social aspect as much as the learning experience. After a while, you get to know the personalities of a lot of the members. From there, we tend to communicate often with the ones with whom we can relate.
It's all part of the process.

If I know the answer, I'll give it; if I don't, if I have the time, I may try to find the answer. Often, if it's a question that is of interest to me, I'll read other people's reply and then I'll leave a comment to thank that person.
