2 more days. China, I'm coming for you!
After over 18 months of waiting, it's now only 2 days until I go to China to complete my charity trek of the Great Wall of China!
I've spent months and months feeling nervous, awaiting the challenge ahead, and now it has completely crept up on me! If anybody has read my blog/site (www.mindfulmantra.co.uk), you will know that I've had issues with anxiety. For a long while I wanted to do something that would challenge me, push me out of my comfort zone, and help me to overcome my anxiety. 18 months ago I booked this challenge because I knew it would help me to meet all of those criteria - as well as doing something amazing for a really great and deserving cause.
One of the key criteria for me being able to complete this challenge, was raise £3000 for a charity of my choice. Cancer has affected my family hugely, but I didn't want to raise money for Cancer Research. Instead, there is a charity local to me called Longfield - they are a hospice for those who are terminally ill, and they support those people and their families throughout diagnosis, the illness, and possibly end of life. They have helped members of my family, and they don't receive enough funding for the incredible work that they do - they truly are amazing.
I'm happy to say that I have raised £2,985.50 so far, so I have very very nearly reached my target! This has been a huge challenge in itself. It has required me to step out of my comfort zone and host events, talk to people I don't know, make phone calls to different people, and put myself out there much more than I ever have. I'm already proud of myself, and I haven't even completed the trek yet!
If anybody would like to read more about my challenge or the charity I'm supporting, or possible even sponsor me to help me reach my target, you can find it all at https://www.justgiving.com/fun...
(Please don't feel like you have to, I don't want to force my fundraising onto the community here at WA! I just wanted to write a post about something I am proud of :) )
Thanks for reading,
Sophie

Have a safe trip, Sophie - out, there and back. And enjoy every minute of it. Well done for facing down your demons and supporting a great local cause at the same time! :-)

You're very welcome, Sophie.
I've long fancied doing the Great Wall myself. Don't suppose you've got room in your suitcase? Lol!
Have a great trip :-)
Rich
Hello Sophie, just a short note to say I wish you the best of luck on your trip and you go with the gratitude and admiration of many, many people, You, do realise it is 3700 miles long; I joke, of course, we know you are going to be walking only a small fraction of that.
So, calm your fears, I am sure you will have a wonderful time, an experience you will remember with pride for the rest of your life.
I hope you will be able to get on the Internet and keep us updated on your progress, the rest of us here at Wealthyaffiliate wish you Bon Voyage.
John
Thank you John!
Yes thankfully I won't be walking all of it!! I'm walking 7-8 hours for 6 days so I'm not sure how many miles I'll be doing really!
I will try to keep everybody updated:)
Thanks!
Sophie
I'm proud of you for even raising that much, I am proud of you that you're making this trek, I'm proud of you thinking where can REALLY use the money and I am REALLY proud to know some one like you, that does all this hard work for no thought of reward. That in itself is a HUGE victory. I used to work at this bar in Toronto called JUGZ....sadly it was a wet t-shirt bar but we were located 2 blocks from Toronto Sick Kids Hospital a very famous and renowned hospital for ....sick kids. I used to go over there before my shifts and I would go show the kids card trick, magic tricks, tell them jokes (I was an entertainment bartender after all) and once a month I would organize a flair bartending competition at a huge bar in Toronto called The Loose Moose and all the money we raised was donated to them and most of the time our winnings we used to go buy video game systems, books, tools, round X-mas time we would take Santa letters and use our winnings for those gifts. When we presented the funds and the gifts, Myself, 2 other gents and a woman who are all flair bartenders, we would get dressed up and do a competition that was all rigged so it was more a show for the kids and we would make drinks like lactose free chocolate milkshakes or Tutti-Frutti Fruit Punches, Shirley temples or whatever else we could make that their diets would allow. That was the greatest one thing I ever did in my life as the kids went nuts over it. So be proud, VERY VERY proud of what you have done for all those families cause you have provided a miracle to someone. Sorry this is so long, I'm a text hog lol
Aw thank you Jair!
It's not very often that people do things for others, I'm glad to hear you've done your bit for the good too!!:)
Good luck tomorrow. O looked at the weather and it's 5% chance of rain (nothing to worry about) but it's going to be warm at a balmy 85F/29C with humidity at 64% so rather a dry heat, overall a walk I would love to do!!! Stay hydrated and all the best to you!!! Cheering you on from Canada!!
Yes I think it's going to be a bit difficult to walk in!! I will do, my flight is this evening so I'll be absent for a little while here haha!
Thanks :)
Wow Sophie a 50 mile trek is a good hike. Looks like a journey of 50miles ends with the last 1% earned (Confucius I believe) ! :)
