Coming up with a Theme for my Affiliate site that was true to ME
"How the heck am I going to make money selling this service that I am still learning about myself?!?"
- a frustrated Me, two days ago
I struggled for a few days trying to come up with a domain name and theme for my WA promotion website. Everything I thought of was clunky, spammy, and cliché, and didn't really FEEL right to me.
The main stumbling block for me was that I was too focused on the idea of "making money", and promoting this WA thing which I was really only vaguely familiar with, being a beginner at it myself.
Feeling very frustrated, I did three things:
- I asked for help.
- I slowed down and went back and started the Affiliate Bootcamp course from the beginning.
- I "took inventory" of myself, making observations of my strengths and values
Help!
One of the WA veterans who welcomed me aboard was kind enough to offer to answer any questions. So I reached out to him.
He reminded me that success is a more of a journey than a destination, and I just needed to make sure I took all the steps, completely and one at a time, and that it would take time.
I realized I was probably feeling a little needy and rushed to make money. So, I decided to slow down and review the first few lessons and steps of the training course, and see if there was anything I missed.
Affiliate Bootcamp — Take 2
The second time through the course, one messaged popped out at me that I hadn't really taken notice of before — it was almost a throw-away notion: "The point of your site is to help people solve their problems."
Oh, yeah. Those OTHER people.
This business can't be about ME and my need and desires for money. That money and success will only come as a by product of making it about OTHER people.
Well, that was a cool revelation because I LOVE HELPING PEOPLE! It's core part of my personality! Then I thought, "what are my other strengths?"
Taking Inventory
I remembered a test I had taken a couple years ago called "StrengthsFinder 2.0". It's a set of questions designed to help you find your personality strengths — the ones that you should focus on because they are what make you happy, and how you best contribute value to the world. My personal strengths were:
- Positivity
- Developer
- Empathy
- Woo
- Includer
It reminded me that I am a natural teacher and an encourager — not only by trade, but by nature. Helping people to succeed and to believe in themselves is one of the few things I will drop anything to take time to do.
Eureka!
And therein, I found the Theme and angle for my site: Encouragement.
Taking a step back and slowing down allowed me to find encouragement to keep on going, and reminded me that my current frustration was only a "stumbling block" — one of the MANY that I will be tripping over along the way. And, one that many of the successful people that I have access to right here on WA have already gotten around.
So, I invite you to take a peek at my new themed website/domain: WorkAtHomeEncouragement.com, coming soon to an Internet near you. All are welcome. :-)

Hey Scott, you are moving and I am confident you will succeed. Lots of work and some time and you will helping lots of people. That is a great thing to learn from WA. We are all in this together. Looking forward to your success. We are all here to help!
Thank you, Dan! I appreciate you reaching out with the encouragement and helping me out. Please stay in touch! I will be sure to do the same.
That is a great name, and something so many people will be able to relate to. Well done, I enjoyed reading of the process you used to come up with it too! Regards, Paul
Thank you, Paul. I appreciate the feedback, and I'm glad it was a worthwhile read for a veteran such as yourself. ;-)
Hi Scotchan, I was just reading your website and noticed on your about me page the links to WA don't work - just incase you weren't aware. All the best, Paul
AH! Thanks, Paul.
You know, I had started to put them in, and then I saw that in a later lesson they explain the best ways to do it, so I hesitated and forgot to get back to it. I should just go ahead and add them, then correct it later if necessary.
Thanks for the reminder!
Well done! I did this myself to refocus on what I was doing and why I was doing it.The website has to be for the reader and about the reader. That is why content is King. If people find your information interesting and useful. They will remember you and return. That is what it is all about. Pleasing the reader.

Have to say, this has been my dilemma for the last week.....guess its time for me to slow down, take a deep breath, go slowly back through and just maybe i can get it done...ty for this post!!!
You're welcome! I hope it's helpful. Shoot me a message if you want to bounce some ideas back and forth.
Grasping onto the concept of helping people early on is going to give you a tremendous edge and WILL be the secret to your success. As for your opening statement, learning about the service (WA) is the easy part. It's all here for you. But it will take time. Remember, if you run into a situation where someone you are helping is stuck and you don't know the answer, just post it here and someone will jump in to help out.
Best Regards,
Jim

Scot, we have a lot in common. I too walked away from WA and came back. When I did I upgraded to Premium, because Premium offered everything. I also enrolled in the affiliate bootcamp, I knew I had to start somewhere. I'm finishing up the second part of bootcamp 2, some of the lessons I had to see the video twice . I'm in for the long haul, I've found that you can never go wrong helping people. I realized in WA you learn then you share with others in the community adding value in what you say. I will be following your progress, I can always have need for another coach. To your success!
Thanks, Ricardo. Coaching can often be a mutually beneficial endeavor and responsibility. "You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours" kind of thing.
I also worked through the Affiliate Bootcamp, and it took weeks to get through level one. In retrospect, I realize that it took a long time because selling WA is not my passion.
I switched back to the "Online Entrepreneur Certification" to work on an old idea I had.
Not only have I found it EASIER to get myself to write, but I think the training there is actually MUCH BETTER than the Bootcamp. I highly recommend going through those 4 phases before coming back to the Bootcamp. It will make a lot more sense.
Please stay in touch!
