I seem to recall reading at one point that Google looks for headline tags in determining how to rank a website. Is this correct?
Are headline tags i.e. h1, h2, h3, etc essential for seo?

Anything that is essential for readability is essential for SEO. Utilizing H tags on your website will make your content much more readable which subsequently will lead to higher rankings (Google absolutely considers readability as a big component of their ranking algo).
I typically leave the title of my posts as is. This is usually an H1 or H2 tag depending on the theme defaults. And then the headlines within the actual content I will usually make H3 tags. I find these are the best for readability and also help you foreshadow your content to your readers...which improves their time on page.
Thanks for you quick response Kyle. I find your answer very interesting, as on a recent post, I added some h3 tags, as I liked the way they looked and flowed. It seems that readability really is key!
