How To Rank Higher With The Search Engines

Hi folks. This week I have seen many questions asked by the WA membership about their page rank and what its all about. After some digging around on the internet I've put together this blog with all the pertinent information I could find you will need to have an understanding of Page Ranking.

Here's goes, but first a short explanation how it all got started.

Excerpt From 'Ask Google' - http://www.askgoogle.net/

Google Page Rank was developed in the mid 90's by Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford University. The two worked for 3 years on an algorithm that could produce a numerical ranking of webpages based on a number of factors.

After a successful prototype was created in 1998, the two went on to found Google shortly after. The Google Page Rank became the standard by which Google now ranks webpages.

The world famous algorithm.

PR(A) = (1-d) + d (PR(T1)/C(T1) + ... + PR(Tn)/C(Tn))

where

PR(A) is the Page Rank of page A,

PR(Ti) is the Page Rank of pages Ti which link to page A,

C(Ti) is the number of outbound links on page Ti and

d is a damping factor

This is the original Google Page Rank algorithm as discovered by Page, and Brin. It has undergone a lot of changes since then. The algorithm that is used today actually bears little resemblance to the original although the basic concept remains the same.

A Definition Of Page Ranking

Google Page Rank is defined by a number from 0-10 (10 being the highest). It is, essentially, a vote of confidence from the community. The higher the Page Rank the more "trusted" your site is by Google. That said, the links from these sites are also highly trusted.

What Does Google Page Rank Mean To You?

Page Rank or PR, in short, should mean everything. If you want to build a great site that will earn you an income, Page Rank is very important. There is a huge misconception floating around that Google Page Rank also determines your search engine results placement (or SERP). This is not so. On Google itself its a very small factor. When I say a small factor, I mean it is only one of a quite a few factors. Did you know that none of the other search engines use Page Rank to determine their results?

That said, Google Page Rank is a very important statistic for a site you want to make money from. Its one of the deciding factors when determining everything from how much you charge advertisers, to the value of your site if you should sell it. You will find that some other sites even charge other sites for a link if their page has a high enough Page Rank.

How To Get A Higher Page Rank

The single most effective way to build a Page Rank has to do with a very basic blogging principle. Write quality content! It's that simple.

Linking Strategies For Page Ranking

Page Ranking is a system that relies heavily on links

Incoming and outgoing links are the biggest factor in your Page Rank. Every link that comes into your site. This means that backlinks, linkbacks, and trackbacks are given a value. The overall value of your incoming links makes up your Page Rank.

Every link is assigned a value based on how high the site that linked to you is rated. As I mentioned above, the higher the Page Rank, the more trusted the site is. Therefore, when it comes to incoming links, the higher the Page Rank of the links, the better your chances of increasing your Page Rank.

There are also factors that you can't control when it comes to PR. The older your site is, the more trusted it becomes and therefore, it is looked upon in a favourable way by Google. Google wants lots of pages, lots of incoming links to those pages, and lots of internal links to your pages. That means that you should try to link to as many pages inside your site as possible. This shouldn't be hard, because it only helps your cause. A "Recent Post" or "Previous Posts" categories in your sidebar is an example of a good internal link.

There are some people that buy incoming links from sites with a high Page Rank. Believe me this is not really a good idea.

1. It costs money and it isn't really cost effective for someone just starting out

2. The sites that do this are usually punished when search engines finds out anyway

To finish - The quickest way to build your Page Rank is to get linked to. Also, I mentioned that writing quality content was the way to build Page Rank, Why? Because the more quality content you put into your articles or blogs, the more pages you accumulate. Google and other search engines love sites with lots of pages. Also, the more quality content you write, the more you get linked to. Incoming links will mean better Page Rank. Its as simple as that.

There you have it people and I hope all is clear to you now and if not then read the blog again.

Enjoy your weekend.

Sadly there's no way for anyone to know or find out what their PR is. As Google stopped updating it publicly a couple of years ago.

3

Agreed, PageRank has been gone a long time. The closest thing now most SEO consultants look at is Page Authority and Domain Authority. Several SEO agencies such as MOZ use this new type of system.

2

Hello Ian and yes its true the almighty Google in its wisdom has stopped updating.
No matter though if the tips and advice in this blog are followed WA members should not have too much trouble getting the site(s) ranked.
