5 Reasons Why Your Website Gets No Traffic

Do you have a love hate relationship with online marketing? Have you wondered how you can work your butt off week after week and have nothing in your bank account to show for it?

Maybe you are the 1 in 100 that just always has it all together. Good on you! But that doesn't describe me. I had to work hard to draw traffic to my websites and there was a time when I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong so no way I could figure out what to do right.

After a time of trial and error, I came up with a few reasons why my website was not getting the traffic I needed. There are a lot more but for this post I am going to focus on five.

-1- Your site is too new

I know the feeling of launching a brand new site. It's exciting. It's like opening a brand new store. Wow it looks great. Beautiful colors, everything laid out in pristine order just like the instruction manual said, shelves all stocked with great products, sign on the door, the front walk all swept and the door open. Then comes the waiting.

You made the announcement...you indexed your site...Google and Yahoo and Bing...the big three publishers all know you are ready for business...but no one notices you on your big grand opening...day two...a little sign of life five visitors stop in...day six eight visitors...still not enough traffic to make you hopeful.

Starting out with a brand new website is a journey of hundreds...no make that thousands of steps. Any journey takes time. In the beginning stages of website development your character will be tested one blog post at a time. It takes a lot of content to draw organic traffic. Post 3-5 times a week. Do you have the patience and determination to succeed?

-2- You don't know how SEO works

Search engines will send traffic your way if you have indexed your site and understand how to research keywords and use them in your website content. If you want more website traffic you must learn everything you can about keywords and SEO. Start with this post by top ranking WA Premium member Boomergp08

-3- Your headlines are boring

OK, Officer, got me there...I admit I am guilty of this one. I think writing headlines is somewhat of an art. Most people don't read past the headline so you need to study how to write good headlines. Beverley's post about how to write a good headline might help you:

-4- Your content is not compelling

No one will follow you if your content is ho hum. Website audiences are real people looking for real solutions. They want to read something from someone they can relate to. Don't forget that website content can include short, entertaining and engaging videos.

Keep your content lively by adding how to videos, guest bloggers, interviews with experts in your niche, case studies, success stories, testimonies, product reviews and so forth.

-5- You are not using the power of social media

You simply must understand your ideal customer and engage with them both through your website content and on the social media platforms they frequent. One of the most powerful ways to leverage traffic to your website is through the horizontal social media channels where your customer is likely to hang out. Put your videos on You Tube. Post your articles on Google+, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Use your website blog as a kind of home base. Feed into it from your social media profiles and engage with others through the WOM power of social media channels.

I know there are dozens of other ways to draw traffic to your website. I gave you a start with a few. Now it's your turn.

Thanks for reading. Please feel free to like this post and share your ideas with others.

Hi Rebeccas , thanks for the 5 steps here mention , i have to go and implement these step which is lacking in my websites

Thank you Rebecca! Just checked Yahoo, Bing and Google...my site is listed on the first search page! Now, to get traffic!!!!

Great job!

Great information and additional resources Rebecca! I am looking into this further thanks to your direction. Looking forward to more postings!

Thanks. I'm loving your website. You have a great eye for web design. Let me know if you need my help!

Thanks for the reassurance and complement Rebecca.

I think at this point I need to put my heel to the grindstone and continue to add content (low QSR and a good amount of traffic) as a means of bringing in some organic traffic.

You are absolutely correct! (Sorry for the late reply...I missed your comment earlier.)

Thanks for this informative post Rebecca. I would also like to ask you something.

My website is 3 months old and I have approximately 25 posts submitted. Today I did a google search for some of my posts using the incognito method and much to my surprise, a few of my posts were ranked between page 2 - 6 and of course some didn't rank.

Anyway, I am pleased with my progress thus far, but traffic is relatively low. I've been adding my pictures and articles on all social media sites (starting from this month).

I don't have much commentary on my website either, perhaps I'm being overzealous and this is nothing more than a rhetorical question. Nevertheless, should I be concerned about the lack of traffic for the number of posts written for a newly developed website? My keywords are low hanging fruit with captivating titles (at least that is the aim).

Thanks for your comment, Charlene. Your website is coming along nicely. I like the aesthetics, your overall concept and the organization. it is evident that you have put a lot of effort into your site.

Regarding traffic, your site is still new. If you follow Kyle's advice, organic traffic will grow as your content grows providing that you 1) research and utilize keywords that get a good amount of traffic and your QSR is low, e.g. not too much competition, and 2) you continue to add high-quality content. As Beverley pointed out in her comment below, it's impossible to draw traffic without a significant amount of content.

Kyle advises to write a post each day for the first 60 days. That strategy accomplishes three objectives....you will find it easier to rank higher in the search engines, you will find it easier to gain a loyal readership who begins to look for and trust your recommendations and you will develop your skill in writing.

It looks like you are on the right track. Continue to add more content to your beautiful site.~Rebecca

Great advice Rebecca. I would add to number 4. You won't get traffic if you don't have content. I often look at sites where people are worried they're not getting enough traffic - and find they have very little beyond the privacy policy, about me and a half written home page. Focus on the content - then worry about the social media - otherwise you're trying to generate 'noise' about nothing.

:) Beverley

How right you are, Beverley. No content...no traffic. I need to add that in Thanks for your comment. ~Rebecca
