Discourage Or Dis (This) Courage
At some point, we all experience setbacks, losses, or total disappointments. Any
of which could cause us to completely give up.
In the event that we continue to press forward, those mishaps can dampen our motivation.
In addition, some of us start second guessing our plans, involvement, or direction. This often has us on edge as we try to move forward.
So the question becomes - Is it discourage or ‘dis (this) courage’ that we feel?
Discourage or Dis (This) Courage?
First, the spelling of ‘dis’ is deliberate. Using proper English, it represents ‘this’ to keep everything in context.
Needless to say, discourage simply means to loose confidence or enthusiasm. In our line of work, it can be an equivalent to writer’s block, a bad case of procrastination, or uncertainty.
We sometimes, temporarily, loose our way. The operative word in this scenario is temporarily.
It becomes hard to focus on the tasks at hand. We cannot string two sentences together. Or even worse, we loose our rhythm.
Seemingly, the harder we try, the farther away we find ourselves. Often times, we are in denial about our situation.
This now becomes our reality!
A hardened stone drifting through space without a clear destination in mind.
Adoring the words written by our comrades as they appear to have great inspiration.
Beating yourself up and contemplating closing up shop and moving on.
This is where ‘dis courage’ comes into play. Dis (This) courage is what we must exercise to move forward.
Having the courage to hang in and fight a good fight is an internal mechanism. We all possess it.
In fact, it is what drove us towards the opportunities that we participate in today. This courage that I speak of is not a one-off.
It is very real!
I can tell you number of the times that I failed or suffered setbacks, but you would be reading until next year, literally.
It takes courage to never give up. Each milestone and failure that we encounter has a meaning.
It is up to us to step back and analyze all of the moving parts. Change that which needs to be charged.
In addition, we can alter our path and modify our goals. We do not have to remain discouraged.
How To Take Advantage Of Dis (This) Courage
Emotions like anger, disenchantment, or even hopelessness are actually all motivators, if we choose them to be.
Consequently, this is not a complicated thought. Get comfortable as I plead my case.
Inherently, we are capable of changing 100% of our thought process. This is generally referred to as our psyche.
No other life form on this earth is capable of intelligently discerning learned behavior.
It is scientifically proven that most animals in the wild have migration pattern. These patterns are adhered to by each generation.
No maps or markings drawn, only routine recognition or a familiarity can sum it up.
We have the ability to see beyond our current situation. Although we cannot accurately predict the future, we can come pretty damn close.
Exercising courage allows us to follow the ebbs and flows of our venture. Both positive and negative events alike.
How we respond is the determining factor. I will be the first to admit that, at times, it can be hard to change one’s mindset.
My solution is quite simple and you can easily do it. Get prepared, I will break it down in the next section.
Factors To Consider When Discouraged
In my opinion, a person can go through tons of mood swings each day whether it is consciously or unconsciously.
We tend to react emotionally to our current state of mind at any given moment.
The mind can be a dangerous place if allowed. Everything starts with a thought that subjects us to the process.
The easiest description is an ‘if/then’ construct. This construct can be applied to just about any process.
For example, I want to write a book that addresses my experiences with affiliate marketing during my journey.
The process would go something like this:
- If I know my subject matter,
- Then I would create an outline to breakdown my thoughts.
- If I plan on writing 10 chapters to cover my journey,
- Then I plan to include an Introduction and Conclusion to clearly explain and summarize my content.
- If I had any setbacks during my journey,
- Then I should include the situation, action taken, and the results.
If we include the branching of topics, we could literally go on and on. In fact, in situations where the ‘If” is negative or no, that introduces the ‘Goto’ construct.
The Goto construct allow us to deviate from our current path with the introduction of optional predetermined paths.
Do you have or utilize these types constructs?
My Recommendation
We can easily find ourselves in a position of uncertainty when it comes to moving forward.
There are thousands of recommendations floated around by people who have experienced such hurdles.
For the sake of argument, I would like to offer another to that painstaking laundry list.
Write, type, or voice record!
Make a record of what you are thinking about, angry about, or feeling in that moment. So what if it has nothing to do with your online business.
Include as many details as possible to describe everything that runs through your mind.
Describe your emotions as you attempt to pour those thoughts out as they appear.
Ask yourself questions and let you thoughts flow naturally without trying to go in any specific direction.
Your mind may travel a mile a minute, so do not beat yourself up if you miss a thought or two.
Anything that crosses your mind once, is bound to cross it again.
Using this technique, you may end with what appears to be a bunch of senseless fragments or a complete post.
Nevertheless, you have a means of working through your discouragement, procrastination, or writer’s block.
Actually, you can rinse and repeat everyday until you create something that you may care to share.
I literally have a couple dozen partial paragraphs in a couple dozen documents from ideas that I hoped to finish over time.
Perhaps someday, I will be able to complete and share them here.

In Conclusion
Feel dis (this) courage and not discouraged in you daily endeavors. We all fall short at one point or another.
Being discouraged is rapidly becoming a staple in life that we cannot avoid, especially in the business world.
The point is that we do not have to let it define us. Losing, just like winning, brings with it a state of mind.
Fight or flight?
It is optional what we choose to do with it. The totality of circumstances in which we struggle does not always consume our last breath.
Sometimes it is just a wake up call to remind us to dig deeper, try little harder, or step away and re-evaluate.
Document those trying times, if could become a New York bestseller or at least on the Amazon Top 10 List.
And I close out by saying, we need what we need!
If we keep our minds right, we can keep our bodies tight!

Great play on words with a truly relevant message Canty.
I recently had to walk away from my website which was going nowhere.
What a breath of fresh air is around me now.
The analogy for me was to have the courage to make this decision. Much thanks to Kyle who nudged me in this direction.
Thanks for writing this post.
Edwin
Absolutely, Edwin! that breath of fresh air is a lifesaver. Just when you throw your hands up, you find those missing pieces, if your mind is open.

Being discouraged comes with the territory. To be successful you battle through the downs and don’t give up. You may slow down sometimes, but don’t give up.
And Mr Hook I thought you were a rocket scientist. The only person who can get a ship to fly around the moon.
Peter, of course it would be you! After such an inspiring statement, you would go there. See, I am trying to keep up with you, all mighty wise one.
A boat around the moon is child's play, I wanna stay young forever. You are the one with secrets.

Great post, Ronnie! I have also been discouraged, especially since I retired. It seems like too much bad stuff has happened since I retired.
Barbara
Thanks, Barbara! Change can be a bit trying at times. We must pick ourselves up and try again.
Canty
I have indeed been discouraged since I was retired from my lifelong industry. It took me some time to get to the realization that it was not coming back and I needed to make my own reality.
Like, Jeff, I have many notes of ideas lying around everywhere. Periodically I go through them and add to some and discard others.
I credit finding WA and this community with pulling me out of the discouraging state I was in for so long. No, I have yet to make a sustainable income, but yes I know it is possible; in the meantime, I have a purpose again and I am happier than I was.
Alex
That’s awesome, Alex! We will all overcome, sometimes by our own devices and sometimes through the help of others.
WA has become the answer for a great many of us.
Keep on moving my friend,
Canty

Ronnie,
Thanks for sharing your well-written words on discourage and Dis (this) courage. I've never heard this explanation before.
I, personally, have experienced many setbacks in my lifetime. It has to be a big component that precedes success.
You elaborate on so many ideal thoughts.
How many books have you written?
I love an intellectual mind. You provided a great composition, which is a work of art, in and of itself.
You obviously put your heart and soul in your writing.
I like when you say if we keep our minds right, we keep our bodies right. They are symbiotically related, my friend.
Sometimes our journey in life is so unpredictable. And we must always be prepared when life throws us a curve.
There is prosperity and fulfillment beyond the curves.
All we can do is trust the process, never give up and continue to rise to occasion as best version of ourselves.
You are an inspiration.
Rachele with one L.
You are on the WA Deans List.
Happy Tuesday!
Thank you for the kind words, Rachele (With one L)! I have yet to write a book, although I have started several. I have been trying to absorb so much that I have not taken the time to finish one.
Perhaps I will get back to it one day soon,
Canty
Thanks and have an awesome day!
Canty
My pleasure Ron,
I had a lot of errands today. just got back a couple of hours ago.
I will do. Also, plan to check out your newsletter as time permits.
