Time Blocking

I was having a conversation with my mom the other day about "Time Blocking". The conversation came about me having a conversation with one of my four nieces' who is a freshmen in college. Xena studies legal agriculture (who knew that existed) and she is very bright. She is in her first semester and she said uncle PJ, I am overwhelmed. So I warned her about the dangers of a 16 week semester relative to a 10 week quarter system.

Xena is on a 16 week semester. Specifically, I warned her of the dangers of a 16 week session that I call the procrastination beast. Maybe some of you are acquainted? I told her it is very easy to get behind the first few weeks of reading, projects and homework because it feels like there is so much time. I tried to impress on her that time is different when your young and in high school but it become precious when your maturing and in college. I recommended Time Blocking.

I am a fanatic about time blocking. I time block just about everything I do except putting my daughter to sleep. I time block 45 minutes every morning to walking my two dogs. We walk 1 mile and sprint the other then I stretch, a few push-ups and sit-ups and I am done. I time block 30 minutes making breakfast and preparing my lunch and so on with my morning routine.

When I get to work it is literally a rate race, so I time block morning sales calls, working with my teams' pipeline, responding to emails, individual coaching, 15 minute walk to get away from the desk and so on. I also encourage my team to time block their similar activities. It really helps make sure you get everything done so you can get home and enjoy time with your family.

So, I recommended to Xena that she should Time Block. Time for her watering her plants, getting plenty of sun, doing her readings, getting some excessive and most of all having fun (whats college without a little fun) My mom said I should market my idea, so I am blogging about Time Blocking (although I am pushing 50 I hope to make my mom proud).

The interesting thing is that most people time block and may not realize they are doing it. Every morning and night routine with the kids is typically in a time block. As well as getting your affiliate business started. Stay tuned for the perils of time vampires.

Time Blocking's a great term. Its a great marketing idea. I think people like myself would also be keen to know what makes you able to get up early all the time. I've been following "the Miracle Morning" fellow, and have started turning my alarm clock back. I haven't yet reached 5:30am let alone 4:00am but there's got to be some Time Blocking I need to do here too.

Hi Ralph, I am also practicing time blocking as you call it but not as regularly as you did. Enjoying reading and learn your your post. [Kelsey]

Thanks for sharing this. I need to time block my activities to make everything done. I remember one of my mentors who shared to me that all people got 24 hours a day, but then someone becomes successful while others do not. Its all a matter of how you budget your time and how you prioritize productive activities. Can't wait to learn from your blog about time blocking as well.
