“The secret of success is constancy to purpose.”
“The secret of success is constancy to purpose.”
When I first read this quote by Benjamin Disraeli, my immediate reaction was, “Ah yes, consistency, the thing I admire deeply and practice… occasionally.”
But the more I sit with it, the more it feels less like a motivational poster and more like a gentle and slightly smug truth about how things actually get done.
To me, constancy to purpose means waking up every day and choosing the same direction, even when my enthusiasm has mysteriously vanished overnight (which happens quite often).
It’s not about dramatic bursts of inspiration or one heroic all-nighter where everything magically falls into place.
It’s about showing up again and again and again, even when progress is slow, invisible, or frankly boring. Especially boring. We’ve all been there.
Success, according to this quote, isn’t impressed by my big plans or my well-written to-do lists, it’s watching to see whether I’ll still care tomorrow.
I like how this quote quietly removes my favourite excuse. You know the one: “waiting until I feel ready.”
Constancy doesn’t care about my mood. It doesn’t ask if I’m tired, distracted, or suddenly interested in reorganizing my entire digital life instead of doing the actual work. It simply asks, “Are you still pointed in the same direction?” If the answer is yes, I’m winning, step by step, unglamorously, but genuinely.
There’s also something comforting about this idea. Success stops feeling like a rare talent bestowed upon the lucky few and starts feeling more like a long-term relationship. I don’t need to impress it every day; I just need to be faithful to the goal.
Some days I’ll sprint, some days I’ll shuffle, and some days I’ll trip over my own shoelaces, but as long as I keep facing the same purpose, I’m still in the game.
Constancy to purpose doesn’t mean rigidity. I can change strategies, learn lessons, and adjust my approach without abandoning the mission entirely.
It’s less “never deviate” and more “don’t ghost your own ambitions.”
And honestly, that feels doable, even for someone like me, who occasionally mistakes procrastination for creative incubation.
In the end, Disraeli’s quote reminds me that success isn’t a secret handshake or a hidden shortcut.
It’s the quiet power of persistence, the decision to keep going long after the novelty wears off. And while that may not sound glamorous, it’s reassuring to know that success favours the stubbornly committed over the perpetually motivated.

Hi, Peter.
Thanks for this. I have not come across this quote before, but I think I like it. It rings true, as does your thoughts on it.
This line of yours "To me, constancy to purpose means waking up every day and choosing the same direction, even when my enthusiasm has mysteriously vanished overnight (which happens quite often)." Has the ring of Integrity to me.
Which is something I try to live daily.
JD
Thank you. I really appreciate that.
Integrity is a beautiful way to describe it, and one I aspire to as well. I’m glad the words resonated, and even more glad to hear we’re trying to live by the same principle.
Amazing post and thanks for sharing!
I need to give my best every day without worrying about the results. With constancy to purpose, results will come one day.

In any success, failure is inevitable. Constantly improving on failures and building on from there will lead to long term success.
Paul.

These articles about constancy and diligence help me a lot to get at least SOMETHING done every day because I can go a large part of the day just wanting to do mindless stuff like binge watching Criminal Minds but then I remember these blog posts about constancy and then I come here to Wealthy Affiliate and GET SOMETHING DONE.
MAC.
Glad it helps you MAC.
I think at times we all fall into the trap of couch potating until we realize there are more productive things we can be doing.
