Yeah unfortunately you do have to upgrade here if you want to install plugins and have more themes to choose from. What the free and premium options are referring to is the free and paid plugins and themes for WordPress in general. Once you have your own domain(s) hosted here, you'll find you have a lot of free options for themes and plugins which are more than good enough.
However there are still paid themes and plugins for WordPress you can choose to get, which have nothing to do with upgrading at WA, that is just how the WordPress platform works in general is there are both free and paid options.

I took a lot of time to think about my niche last night and came up with an idea or two. I f
I Love movies! Great niche idea. What do you think about adding a writing forum where members rewrite the movie ending?
Pattrick it sounds like a good idea. You might want to set up a forum and link the forum to your website. Forums tend to slow sites down. You might look into this forum platform or one like it.
