Important to remember when uploading images

Ok people. Some of you may be taking photos on your smart phones or cameras for uploading to your website. This is an excellent idea as you can be sure that your images are copywrite free (important when using images to make money). There are copywrite free images available online at sites such as freeimages(dot)co(dot)uk to help you make your website look attractive.

Hopefully I can save you some time as I just spent quite a while trying to upload an image and getting nothing but "HTTP error"

It was only when a lovely community member directed me to the dashboard/settings/media page that i noticed the limit on image sizes by pixels!!!!

Large images can be no larger than 1024 x 1024 pixels.

I checked the dimensions of the image I was trying to upload and they were something like 3264 x 2185 meaning that my image was way too large.

"I have that problem too!" I hear you cry.... "what do I do?????"

Hit Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint

(for windows - apple users must also have a free picture editor somewhere)

The image might load really big so you cant see all of it - just zoom out until you can see it all.

Hit the resize tab and you'll get an option to resize by pixels.

Type 1024 into the box with the largest of the dimensions (width or height)

Hit Save if you want to replace the original image or save as if you want to keep the original.

In fact it would be a good idea to create a folder on your desktop for edited files that you want for your website. That way you always have the original as a back up somewhere else and all your compatible images are in one place.

Hope this helps.

Now go out there and get em you tigers (grr)

AMENDMENT

I have also just noticed that you can change the size of the resolution for pictures in Settings > Media for Thumbnails, Medium and Large Pictures just by typing in the maximum amount of pixels for width and height in each.

Much quicker and easier!

You are a lifesaver my man! Thanks!!!

Steve

This post helps.
Thanks for sharing

Sometimes it is the file name. I remembered that I put a sign in the name and Wordpress didn't allow it.

I think I put a # or ? sign. Forget which one. Microsoft Paint allows you to save with a sign but when you upload it to Wordpress, it will show HTTP Error.

And, yes, you should consider the file size.

Hi Arie, yes sometimes it is...I agree...but try it out, most bad filenames, will either get fixed at OS/File System level now, ie, the OS will tell it is not allowed...depending on the OS and FS of course.

And if you upload bad file names, even with a? some servers/WP installation will rewrite the filename to remove the special chars, try it out...

It does not work everywhere but it is quite common these days, so bad file names are not a big problem like they once were.

Yesterday, I uploaded files with double extensions, for example, .jpg.jpg and .png.png I have uploaded filenames with # and other chars and all of them landed without issue.

The real problem is bad folder names, which you will be warned about when you try to create or rename the folder usually and file paths that are too long.

Long file paths is an odd one, and fairly common actually, because despite the fact you can see the file, and even use it mostly, when you try to move it or copy it elsewhere, such as with FTP or PHP uploads, the receiving/requesting server will report an I/O error often and tell you it cannot find the file, read the file or that (and here is the bit people get confused on because the file name is not the same as the file path) the file name is too long/bad and like I say, despite the fact you can see it!

The tip here is to move the files/folder up one level and see if this fixes it...the quickest and most useful solution, in this case, is to zip the files up, then move the zip file to a higher folder location or create a new folder on the root and unzip them to there, this usually fixes long file path issue that gets mistaken for bad filename issues. If this fails things can be a bit trickier.

I also uploaded a 50MB video and a 32MB photo to my own hosting service as a test proof that WP has no issue with large files as long as the server is setup properly and you are under the Max upload limit.

Of course, if you are suffering from a fundamental issue in the first place, such as HTTP error due to high latency and poor responses, and with no explanations of why, it is easy to start blaming things that seem 'apparently obvious' when in fact, they make no difference.

Best wishes

Neil

Thank you, Neil.

You gave me some valuable information! I learned a lot.

ARG!

Still having trouble uploading images.
Even if I resize them or reduce the file size.

I have an image that's 1.8M big and I'm getting the HTTP error message again......

SO FRUSTRATING!

Phat I get the same error, irrelevant of the file in PX, nav away and back, see if that helps, this is is to do with the latency and updating the GUI..It works for me.

Neil

If all else fails try the FTP route, but try the nav away and back again a couple of times, you may find it works, I explained it all on the thread...

Neil

I did read your thread Neil thanks

Yeah, I am sad this doesn't work for you...right pain the ass...

Neil

You can resize your images online here: http://resizeimage.net/
Just enter the size you want it to be.
Lots of other things you can do there too.

You could see if the Site Techs have anything to say on the matter, this is obviously an issue for lots of folks here, I rarely have this issue anywhere else...so it is clear to me there is something amiss on the back end config...

Neil

Thanks Neil.
How do I contact the site techs?

Take a look at the pic...

Also if you want I can create you a testing account on one of my WordPress sites so you can test the upload, see if we can eliminate if the issue is at your end or theirs, if you like?

Neil

Thanks Neil
That's very kind of you!

I will set you one up and PM you the details...you can then just test the uploads see if you get the same results, lets see what happens.

Neil

I checked it out Ben, very useful...I personally use Photoshop and Illustrator to reduce file sizes but this site is a great resource, well worth knowing about thank you...

I think Phat was uploading a larger file for test purposes to see when and where the issue flared up, I do not believe it was not an active ignore of your input.

Neil

Hi, Neil. You know what you are doing, though. I was trying to help everyone with the problem they were having.

I too use software to do it. But that free site does it all for you If you are stuck. Just don't understand why anyone with problems did not check it out.

Ben, he may well have, we dont know yet, he may be away sleeping, tending to his life, hiding away from us all, who knows.

I had asked him to test out the uploads just to see if he was getting problems at what size.

I have to be honest, I very rarely experience the issues many folks seem to experience here at WA with their uploads.

However, even I suffer them here too and I have FibreOp 72Mb/30Mb and Cat6/6A cables running through Gbit smart switches into a Gbit router, and I have an onsite DNS server (not my router), so not a slow network setup, and yet, I still get HTTP errors, timeouts and all the same problems many have here.

I have a number of sites and this is the only place I get these issues consistently, and I was trying to give Phat the proof that it is a problem here at WA or somewhere on the way into WA.

By giving him the option to try to upload those files to one of my services, and then suggesting this really is something that the Techs should take a closer look at considering the number of people suffering from this issue.

Best wishes

Neil

I understand that Neil and you are correct. I moved my sites from WA because of slow speed problems. My connection is 240Mb download.
You are right in saying files should be circa 200kb. Files of 1.8Mb is crazy. The site I mentioned does everything you need if you don't have the software to do it.

Basically, you can leave all the default settings and just enter the image size you want.

And there was a 5 hour difference between my suggestion and an answer to you:)

Anyway, I hope he gets it sorted. That is the primary concern!

Yes, I absolutely agree Ben, it would be good to get it fixed for Phat..Or at least give him some idea of where the issues lie, I already believe it is a WA issue but it is tough convincing certain folks this is the case and the WordPress that they experience here is not a global one by any means.

One of the issues I noticed was that the WP GUI was not refreshing in a timely manner, and if you nav away from the media centre after a short time and back again, the files actually showed up for me...I have done this around 30+ times now and the only file that failed to show up was a 22MB photo (crazy I know but it was a testing run!)

Anyway, best wishes Ben and I am sure if you have anything else to throw it will be most welcome, and hopefully, Phat can try out that site to reduce the images he has.

Best wishes

Neil

RE the sizes Ben I did not check but can you keep certain resolutions say you wanted a wide header and wanted to keep it 1600px or 1920px but reduce the quality of the jpg, itself to say 50% or 30%, I do this in photoshop myself, but is this possible on the site you posted? This is a very useful I find and is a great way to keep the image size in px while reducing its size in MB...

Neil

Yes Neil,. Here is an output for example:

Your image has been resized from 3264x2448 pixels( 2.9 MB ) to 3264x2448 pixels( 727.1 KB ). 50%

Ben that is very very useful for folks who don't have Photoshop or Gimp or similar, I will BM that link...

Thank you...

Neil

It is certainly much quicker Neil than firing up software. And for blog post images it is perfect.

Aye, it is very useful, for me I usually have PS open anyway and if not I have a pretty quick SSDs, a ton or RAM and a decent i7 so don't mind the wait!!!.

I do like this site though and I am going to recommend it to others.

Neil

Sorry I missed your post before Ben.
Thanks for the heads up - will definitely use this if I have more problems in the future in fact I'll bookmark it now :)

Sure thing Bruce. Hope you get it sorted.

Hi Phat, these settings have no effect on the ability to upload files in larger PX...

Glad you are back on track though.

regards

Neil

That's weird because once I'd revised the picture it uploaded fine!

Resized lol

Yes because you have reduced its MB, thus the upload time is reduced, I have written about this 2-3 times already. If you had a 2000px file that was 200kb it would upload fine, I showed this yesterday.

I promise you, WP had absolutely no issue uploading or using files larger or different than the sizes listed in that section and that section has a direct effect on the file sizes you can upload to WP.

The issue here is with the latency, not the size in PX.

Best wishes

Neil

Understood.
Thanks again!

Good you are back on track, get cracking on with your work!!!

;)

Neil

Just tried to upload an image 1.8meg large and HTTP error.
I thought I had it sorted......
:(

Did you nav away from the Media Library as I suggested? And Back Again? Out of interest, did you read what I posted on the thread you started about the nav away and back again?

Neill

Resized it to smaller dimensions, file is now bigger but uploads fine!

YUP

Yes frustrating Phat, worth getting setup with FTP if you can...This method worked for me every single time so it's a shame it doesn't work for you...

And its a shame we cant see the server logs to find out what is actually happening behind the scenes.
