Thank you for bring these words down to a tech dummies level. I become frustrated easily and sometimes it is hard to grasp directions if you do not understand the meaning and the different uses of words.
I have known since the 70's that this was the way to go but never had the time nor the inclination to explore this properly. When I ask others around me "what are you talking about" they immediately move past me and it is like "over my head" and "past my ears". I can OPERATE a computer, meaning I can use what someone else puts there, but putting my own thoughts and ideas to use is hard. I apparently am slightly [lots] OCD in this. Gotta know the why and where and who and all the other things to make it work.

Hi Valeria, there is a lot to take in and master with what you are being asked to do at WA, it can be somewhat overwhelming in the first instance and often we can feel lost and this makes us want to give up.

Do not give up, keep working away, a little bit of something everytime you take to the computer, the speed of progress is often another frustration for folks, but again, do not let this get you down, as long as you do something and take action and steps, even small ones, in the long run, they all count.

Do the lessons, miss nothing out and ask when not sure or stuck or just need a bit of moral support and a pep talk.

There are lots of great people here who will help you along the way and If I can be of help to you then please ask and I will do my best to point you in the direction you need to be heading.

Hi Neil,
I have a question...
I went to gtmetrics.com today to look at my websites performance. Everything looked good, accept for the page speed, which gave me a grade of F(7) in red. It said, "The host findingspirits.com should enable Keep-Alive. It serves the following resources"... then it listed a bunch of stuff, mostly to do with my theme I think.
Any thoughts on this?

Indeed, shared hosting...what score did you get from Google https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/

Mine hits about 86 on both Gmet and Google at the moment but I plan on moving my image stuff to CloudFlare...I reckon high 80s upwards is a good start and 90+ is great, though it means there are still things you may be able to tweak, some of them you may not have control over.

You can also add a caching plugin like Super Cache or similar, and other things like Smush it if your images are causing any issues, I prefer to optimize my images prior to upload but smush it is a great way to get your images cleaned up if you have no other way, though it can take some time if you have lots of them.

Also worth keeping your database optimized and as small as poss, again you can get a plugin for this.

Take a look here, https://techtage.com/speeding-up-wordpress-sites/

Some good tips.

Hi Mark, no it's ok...Your rank was 74 and desktop 87, both could be tweaked but to be honest, at this point, I would not get too concerned about it, the high 80s is a great start, and you are in the same region as my own latest site.

Tweaking and improving is an art itself and some of it, you won't be able to fix because it is outside of your control and some of it, you won't be in a position to fix right now but could tackled later.

You can use a caching plugin check here, www.designbombs.com/top-wordpress-caching-plugins-compared/ I use WP Super Cache myself partly because my host recommends it with their cloud setup.

Hi Mark, we, of course, want to be in the 90s really but, there are a ton of sites not even in the 80s, and lots are under 50-60s, I looked at a site or two this week who hit low 30s for mobiles and mid-40s for desktops.

You, and I, got a green tab from Google on the desktop so my thoughts on the matter are that if Google give us a green light we can be happy with that for the time being and then get back to it later when we have more time and inclination to see if we can get it into the 90s...

Good day Neil,
I'm new to this platform but found it very helpful that elsewhere I've been around.I'm now on a free membership and due to financial reasons I would like to start my free website that include siterubix dot com as I've completed course 1.Once I use that website in google ad-sense and Amazon affiliate programs, will this affect my results as I'm planning to upgrade to premium membership and have my own domains within 2 months? Will I be able to replace the first one with others of my domains?your comments would be appreciated.

Regards.
Reply
NeBro Premium
Hello Solange...

You are highly unlikely to b accepted for Adsense and other similar ad programs with your free site, the reason for this is that your free site is a third party subdomain. aka, you do not own it, and it is not a root domain name, as in, solangeswebsite.siterubix.com, of course, you choose the first part, but the site rubix is owned by WA.

You will generally be ok with Amazon on a subdomain, but some of the vendors who work with sites like Commission Junction may refuse to work with your site, though to be fair, many will, and you should find plenty of vendors to work with.

You can absolutely move your SR domain to your own domain names, there are lessons and training on this available from a number of people here at WA, so when you are ready to do this post back and we can get you some guidance on the process and get you moving along.

If you can afford it, I suggest you take the $19 month and continue your work, and when you can afford it, purchase a domain name of your own, either here at WA or go for a deal at one of the other registrars such as GoDaddy, NameCheap 1&1 or your preferred registrar.

Having your own domain name will give you a much stronger presence on the web and removes the restrictions that some ad programs will place on third-party subdomains and the sooner you get this in place the better for you.

Please post back if you need more input or have more questions.

Wishing all the best of success in your journey and I look forward to seeing your progress.

I finished all of the Level 1 Course (as far as I can get for free) but I have one problem.

My pages, although written and published are not appearing on my website so I can't access my page content. Do you have any idea why this might be and what I can do about it?
Reply
NeBro Premium
Hey Martin, yes, I have an idea that it may be your menu....

You need to make sure you have 3 things going on here.

1 your pages are published and not still in draft mode http://easywpguide.com/wordpress-manual/saving-and-publishing-content/

2 and 3 You need to have a menu setup and added to the 'Manage locations' http://www.wpbeginner.com/beginners-guide/how-to-add-navigation-menu-in-wordpress-beginners-guide/ because some themes have multiple menu points so WP needs to be told which goes where for it to appear in the appropriate place.

If this is not what you are looking for or does not fix your issue then pls post back.

Hey Neil,

Reading your post now but wanted to drop in and give you a heads up!

Your Amazon ad is actually covering up your archive table on your right side bar. Not sure if you knew this or not and there's no way to exit or remove the ad so it's just stuck there. Looks a little funny.

Anyways, thought I would let you know in case you wanted to try adjusting.

Hi Dalton, I know what it is, it is because the amazon links through an Iframe and has specific sizes so when the screen sizes down, the rest of hte content scales but the iframe sticks and breaks the layout, and I have not wrapped it in another element to help scaling... :-| I will take a look at it shortly...

So could do with getting a rest, more exercise and getting out more and not just to KFC...haha

Hi Rona, you can use WordPress to run your e-commerce site, you may be best of purchasing a premium theme that has support and design for things like e-commerce, but many of the free ones do this, but may require more work, as they will lack things like, shop pages, portfolio pages and other pre-designed custom layouts etc.

Also take a look at plugins for e-commerce, such as woo-commerce, http://ecommerce-platforms.com/articles/7-best-free-wordpress-ecommerce-plug-ins

In addition, follow the lessons, in the order prescribed, this is will show you how to work with WordPress and how to leverage some of the options available to you for monetizing your site.

PM me or post back if you need more input.

Hi Kyle, yeah, VB, C#, bit of Python, PHP, HTML/CSS, no Java or Ruby or Perl, and lots of SQL, not really a coder though, aka, full blown software dev.

Most of my time was spent as System/Network Admin and DBA, and on HelpDesk/Support, and setting up networks and installing all manner of software for companies, directors, staff and so forth, basically making it all work so they could do their own work, spent many hours fixing Exchange and restoring SQL DBs...

I got 4 Win boxes here, 1 Win Server on 2012R2, 2 Linux Ubuntu servers, used to run on Debian, and a couple of NAS drives, even got an old BSD box knocking about somewhere, running FreeBSD, and an old OpenSuse box somewhere too, haha...

Hi Annette, I agree we need a few kind words and thoughts here and there for sure.

I am pretty flexible and strong in spirit and mind, and not much gets me down, to be honest.

I do however have trouble sleeping so this takes its toll on me sometimes.

I am often awake for long periods, due to the sleeping issues and my work, I am a System Admin and support tech so I often have to do my work 'out of hours' when everyone else has gone home or before they arrive to work. So my routine is pretty much non-existent.

In addition, of course, the' regular world' lives in the daytime, so I have to be awake for some of it at least, which means my sleeping hours take another hit. Sometimes I do my work and come home and sleep other times I do my work, come home and do more work as I sometimes work remotely.

The other day I was absolutely dead on my feet and was just at the point I needed to give up for the day, which I did, when reading Steph's post and a few others it just helped me to remember why I do these things, and why I spend so much time helping others and working towards attaining more knowledge and success, it was a very nice mental charge up for me because I was literally drained.

Thank you for chiming in here and posting your words of support it means a great deal to me, and others, to know we have other folks around us who are going through the mill too!

Don't feel embarrassed either Annette, the community here is fantastic and there is someone here for everyone if you know what I mean.

Someone will fit with you and help you along your path when you are in need.

Best wishes

I am positive that this year will be the year for all of us. We have to go through some tough times to truly understand why we need to do what we do to make a better life for ourselves.

Hi Neil, I can relate to the long hours that Systems Admin and Support put in, because I have been there myself doing support for multiple websites and software systems. When everyone else got to go home at 5pm, I was still there until 7pm if not later.

So, you have done a good thing by joining WA. You will make it happen.

Hi Jason, I agree, I have a few work things to get out of the way first, and I am supposed to be going to London in the next couple of weeks for some training on tech support for Xray machines, the software, not the hardware.

Chatting is easy cos it takes 5 mins here and there and I can write an article in chunks...in between other things, whereas working on the site takes hours at a time, this is not a problem in itself just I have other things that have a higher priority for huge chunks of time right now.

You are of course correct in the directive to get working on my own stuff and I fully intend to do so in the coming weeks.

Hi Jason, thank you for dropping in :) I have been working through the videos/tutorials/articles, but it’s a slow process as I have a lot of other stuff going on.

I have just today got to lesson 3 about creating a website. So obviously been through the 'choosing your niche' lesson.

I had a few thoughts that may work for me, I did not really look too hard to be truthful, but the ones that came to mind first off include:

Computer Security, for example anti-virus, firewall, as I have direct experience of both consumer and enterprise grade security suites and this is something a lot of folks are concerned about these days. So, I am thinking this could be something worth getting on board with as this is a huge market and a growing one.

Diabetes health, as I am a diabetic, I have some grasp on the daily challenges and the long-term issue related to diabetes. One area that is an issue, is T2 diabetics on insulin often have weight issues, so weight loss for diabetes/diabetics could be one possible target audience, and of course the rising number of folks looking on-line for low carb diets is rising too as are the number of books available.

Promoting WA, this sounds like an easy option to me, takes no thought, and one that could pay off, IF you have the time to dedicate to spending lots of time here, to help move your prospects along their own pathways and support them in their start out journey and take care of your business here.

I do not have that amount of time, plus, at this stage I know very little about the whole WA thing and figure it makes sense to complete the training and gain a broader/deeper understanding of the more complete WA experience before I can feel comfortable promoting it and before I can comfortably guide others on their way.

General Blogging, well I know this sounds like a ‘wide’ and kind of unknown target, but I figure that’s the beauty, just promote yourself as it were, and this allows you to have some freedom as to what you do and say, and rather than the site being targeted, posts and series of posts can be targeted. For example, I could cover any of the previous topics on said site. But I need to think on this some more.

That’s about it so far…

Thanks again and best wishes…

Hi, Neil,

I think you are on the right track with the Computer Security niche. It appears that you have the most experience in this field.

Diabetes health is also a niche that is quite popular and once you can offer your genuine help, I am sure that you will capture your audience.

Now, promoting WA is also great, however, as you rightly put it, you need to have a deeper understanding so that you will be able to provide expert help to the people who you invite to join.

General Blogging is also a very great idea. This will allow you to brand yourself and create a loyal following, provided that you are adding value.

I would advise that you start out with the niche which you have the most experience in (probably Computer Security) and then diversify AFTER you have started getting a good flow of traffic and revenue to your website.

Just be sure to do your market research before you create your website.

I have confident that you will be doing well here at WA if you make the decision to complete the courses and apply what you learn in building out your website(s).

Have a fantastic day ahead.

Best,
Jason.

Hi Jason thank you for the input, I really appreciate the insight and support.

I am thinking too that computer security may be a great place to start, I am leaning towards this mentally and I suppose emotionally as I feel fairly comfortable with it and see no reason to make life while learning these additional skills any tougher than it needs to be.

I hope you have a great day too.

Regards

Agreed. It is always better to start off with a passion or an interest - it makes sense.

Talk to you soon.

In success,
Jason.

Hey Jason thanks for the message, was just running through the introduction videos, to get a feel for what its all about. I am still torn between being confused about what I could do and being excited about being able to do something...I am just not sure what yet...

Anyway thanks again for the input and I hope to be conversing with you more as time goes on...
