Hi everyone, I am Neil, I live in the UK with my missus, stepson and 2 cats.

I have been working in IT for about 20 years, graduated from College back in 1996 with an HND/Advanced Diploma in Information Technology Systems. I went to work for one of the UK's first Microsoft Gold Partners and from there moved on to working for the (now defunct) Audit Commission amongst other things.

I enjoy creating applications, though most of my work has involved databases and office applications so much of my time was/is spent writing in VBA/VB/SQL and have just started getting back into C# and Unity. I have also created a few websites using WordPress, but mostly I just install such things for other folks, I am also the Sysadmin for 5-6 Linux/Apache webservers for small business in my area.

I also enjoy cooking, walking and learning and I have just started the CS50x - Introduction to Computer Science (just so I can get back to some formal learning and re-learn/learn some of the newer things that have been going on since I was at college last time around) from HarvardX and EDX. I am also a member at CodeAcademy, Microsoft Virtual Academy, Degreed and The Khan Academy.

I have joined WA because I want very much to try to make something for myself and family, something that can potentially earn some cash and give me more freedom, and hopefully learn a few things about internet marketing and running an internet based business.

Best wishes to everyone here at Wealthy Affiliate.

Hi Nebro,

Thanks for the follow.

Looks like you and I have very similar backgrounds. I operate Ubuntu on my computers at home. One android tv box as well. :)

I used to be in the IT field as a software developer and instructor. I've done everything from VB, C++, Java, Ruby ~

Nice to meet you. I felt at home reading your profile, except for the UK part. At least I can spell it. LOL

Hi Kyle, yeah, VB, C#, bit of Python, PHP, HTML/CSS, no Java or Ruby or Perl, and lots of SQL, not really a coder though, aka, full blown software dev.

Most of my time was spent as System/Network Admin and DBA, and on HelpDesk/Support, and setting up networks and installing all manner of software for companies, directors, staff and so forth, basically making it all work so they could do their own work, spent many hours fixing Exchange and restoring SQL DBs...

I got 4 Win boxes here, 1 Win Server on 2012R2, 2 Linux Ubuntu servers, used to run on Debian, and a couple of NAS drives, even got an old BSD box knocking about somewhere, running FreeBSD, and an old OpenSuse box somewhere too, haha...

Thanks for the follow back and keep up the great work and support you give to folks around WA.

Best wishes

Hello Neil ... thank you for the follow. I think I've said this before in a thread, but I believe that you are a "can't miss" for achieving your goal stated above. You certainly have the technical background, so all that remains is for you to appropriately express yourself on the sites you develop.

I wish you the best on your WA journey.

Pleasure to meet you Neil. I am Steph, one of the ambassadors here at WA. Thank you so kindly for following me. I am now following you as well. I too have taken many computer classes and I believe that digitization is the way of the future and we need to be on the forefront of it.

With your incredible experience in hand and a strong desire to make this work, you will have what it takes. My best advice to you is to never give up. If this is the life style you desire, than go for it and don't let anything stop you.

Thank you Steph, I am really very weary right now and your words have given a little boost, not that I wanted to give up I just feel a bit worn down...

Today I have had some really good contact from 3-4 of the people in my network (And now yourself) that have really helped to keep my thoughts focused on my goals.

Thanks Steph.

Hi Neil:

I am really glad I was able to be one of those few people whom have helped give you that extra push and incentive to keep working at it. Before you can achieve success, you have to fail a few times, so it is okay to have things go wrong, because that is all part of it. Keep plugging away and someday you will see the light....

Hi Steph, indeed, I am just tired, I was awake for 23 hours and have lots of work to do...I am not disheartened, just blimming weary as hell...which make your mind not want to do anything...haha...

It has been really good today getting some positive input.

Thanks again.

I think we all need the moral support at times...I am a very outgoing person but feel a disconnect on line...Trying to move past that and not feel embarrassed about wanting to get ahead.

Let's do this thing!!!

Hi Annette, I agree we need a few kind words and thoughts here and there for sure.

I am pretty flexible and strong in spirit and mind, and not much gets me down, to be honest.

I do however have trouble sleeping so this takes its toll on me sometimes.

I am often awake for long periods, due to the sleeping issues and my work, I am a System Admin and support tech so I often have to do my work 'out of hours' when everyone else has gone home or before they arrive to work. So my routine is pretty much non-existent.

In addition, of course, the' regular world' lives in the daytime, so I have to be awake for some of it at least, which means my sleeping hours take another hit. Sometimes I do my work and come home and sleep other times I do my work, come home and do more work as I sometimes work remotely.

The other day I was absolutely dead on my feet and was just at the point I needed to give up for the day, which I did, when reading Steph's post and a few others it just helped me to remember why I do these things, and why I spend so much time helping others and working towards attaining more knowledge and success, it was a very nice mental charge up for me because I was literally drained.

Thank you for chiming in here and posting your words of support it means a great deal to me, and others, to know we have other folks around us who are going through the mill too!

Don't feel embarrassed either Annette, the community here is fantastic and there is someone here for everyone if you know what I mean.

Someone will fit with you and help you along your path when you are in need.

Best wishes

Neil

I am positive that this year will be the year for all of us. We have to go through some tough times to truly understand why we need to do what we do to make a better life for ourselves.

Hi Neil, I can relate to the long hours that Systems Admin and Support put in, because I have been there myself doing support for multiple websites and software systems. When everyone else got to go home at 5pm, I was still there until 7pm if not later.

So, you have done a good thing by joining WA. You will make it happen.

Hello Neil, now I understand. I have been amazed at the dept of your knowledge on the occasions I come upon your answers to the new ones doing Level 1 of their training. It never occurred to me to check out your Profile Page as the answer might be there.

I have just looked over your Posts Titles on your page here hoping to see something about organizing your navigation menu - categories and such. I have looked at someones' post in the past about it, and completely confused myself. My IT knowledge is at the other spectrum from yours - I meant Far end :-).

Welcome to WA Neil, may you achieve all your goals and desires.
Now following you.

Hi Jason, thank you for this...

I am very pleased to see my rank...I have not actually worked to gain a rank, I have just been trying to help out where I can, practice my helping, my writing and trying to get into the habit of being active on a 'site' regularly.

I am however, very very happy to see my Top 200 badge...

Neil, your ranking is a result of how helpful and active you are within the WA community.

I am very sure that many folks here have benefited from your helpful content and expert advise.

Going forward, I would suggest that you pour out the same energy on your own website as that is where you are going to earn the income which you desire.

I am excited to read your website's content once you get rolling with publishing.

All the best and thanks for the wonderful knowledge that you share with us.

Hi Jason, I agree, I have a few work things to get out of the way first, and I am supposed to be going to London in the next couple of weeks for some training on tech support for Xray machines, the software, not the hardware.

Chatting is easy cos it takes 5 mins here and there and I can write an article in chunks...in between other things, whereas working on the site takes hours at a time, this is not a problem in itself just I have other things that have a higher priority for huge chunks of time right now.

You are of course correct in the directive to get working on my own stuff and I fully intend to do so in the coming weeks.

Best wishes

I hope you have a fantastic and successful trip as you venture over to London. The Xray machines software does sound awesome and I am sure that you will be able to get the specialized knowledge that you need to move forward in that field.

I believe in priorities, so I have to agree with your statement. Do what you need to do to reach where you want to be.

In due time, I will get to see your work.

All the best to you, Niel.

I hope things are going well. I know you are getting rolling within the training and there is ONE thing that always tends to confuse people and that is "what is my niche?".

I know, same thing happened to me when I started.

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I am here if you ever want to run any niche "ideas" by me or you have any questions about finding your niche.

Get back to me when you get the chance! :)

Hi Jason, thank you for dropping in :) I have been working through the videos/tutorials/articles, but it’s a slow process as I have a lot of other stuff going on.

I have just today got to lesson 3 about creating a website. So obviously been through the 'choosing your niche' lesson.

I had a few thoughts that may work for me, I did not really look too hard to be truthful, but the ones that came to mind first off include:

Computer Security, for example anti-virus, firewall, as I have direct experience of both consumer and enterprise grade security suites and this is something a lot of folks are concerned about these days. So, I am thinking this could be something worth getting on board with as this is a huge market and a growing one.

Diabetes health, as I am a diabetic, I have some grasp on the daily challenges and the long-term issue related to diabetes. One area that is an issue, is T2 diabetics on insulin often have weight issues, so weight loss for diabetes/diabetics could be one possible target audience, and of course the rising number of folks looking on-line for low carb diets is rising too as are the number of books available.

Promoting WA, this sounds like an easy option to me, takes no thought, and one that could pay off, IF you have the time to dedicate to spending lots of time here, to help move your prospects along their own pathways and support them in their start out journey and take care of your business here.

I do not have that amount of time, plus, at this stage I know very little about the whole WA thing and figure it makes sense to complete the training and gain a broader/deeper understanding of the more complete WA experience before I can feel comfortable promoting it and before I can comfortably guide others on their way.

General Blogging, well I know this sounds like a ‘wide’ and kind of unknown target, but I figure that’s the beauty, just promote yourself as it were, and this allows you to have some freedom as to what you do and say, and rather than the site being targeted, posts and series of posts can be targeted. For example, I could cover any of the previous topics on said site. But I need to think on this some more.

That’s about it so far…

Thanks again and best wishes…

Hi, Neil,

I think you are on the right track with the Computer Security niche. It appears that you have the most experience in this field.

Diabetes health is also a niche that is quite popular and once you can offer your genuine help, I am sure that you will capture your audience.

Now, promoting WA is also great, however, as you rightly put it, you need to have a deeper understanding so that you will be able to provide expert help to the people who you invite to join.

General Blogging is also a very great idea. This will allow you to brand yourself and create a loyal following, provided that you are adding value.

I would advise that you start out with the niche which you have the most experience in (probably Computer Security) and then diversify AFTER you have started getting a good flow of traffic and revenue to your website.

Just be sure to do your market research before you create your website.

I have confident that you will be doing well here at WA if you make the decision to complete the courses and apply what you learn in building out your website(s).

Have a fantastic day ahead.

Best,
Jason.

Hi Jason thank you for the input, I really appreciate the insight and support.

I am thinking too that computer security may be a great place to start, I am leaning towards this mentally and I suppose emotionally as I feel fairly comfortable with it and see no reason to make life while learning these additional skills any tougher than it needs to be.

I hope you have a great day too.
