Do You Know What You Want?

Preamble

Studies have shown that as few as 5% of all people are successful at achieving their goals. These are not my statistics. They are statistics that anyone can obtain with little effort.

Stand at any street corner, on a Monday morning, and have a look at everyone making their way to work. I'm sure you will agree, that most of these people, seem to have no real purpose to their lives.

The Look is uninterested and tired, and their thoughts seem to be a thousand miles away. Do not make the mistake of saying "Good Morning", too many times, in these throngs of people.

You will get an odd stare, get hit with an object, or maybe worse.

For the most part, these are not happy people going to their favorite destination!

What do you want?

"Knowing what I want", is such a simple concept, that it eluded me for years.

Imagine for a moment, if you could climb to the bridge of a ship, and speak to the Captain. If you asked this captain, "Where is this ship going?", the Captain would be able to reply to your question in an instant!

He would say that this ship is going an exact destination, ... an exact port. He would not answer by saying that he is not quite sure of his destination. He would not answer by saying that his next port of call is probably Amsterdam, but it could also be New York or Singapore.

The Captain would reply very confidently, that his ship is going to Singapore. There would be no doubt whatsoever in his mind, where his ship was going.

This is why ships reach their destination, barring some unforeseen mishap.

People are exactly like ships. We need a precise course to reach our destination.

Do You Have a Plan to Get There?

Let's get back to my ship. I will call my ship, the MV My Goal. My ship needs a precise course to follow, if it is to reach its destination.

I cannot travel west for 10 hours and stop awhile, ... rest and reset my course to north for 2 days, ... and stop again, or to even wander aimlessly all over the Pacific Ocean, and have any hope of reaching my destination.

This would be a ridiculous plan for me to follow, if I wanted to reach Singapore!

We are all familiar with the "rudderless ship", and there is no doubt that any unguided vessel will soon end up on a reef after wandering aimlessly on the ocean.

I refuse to let go of my wheel!

Are You Working on Your Plan Everyday?

The only way that my ship can reach its port of call is to follow an exact course.

An example would be, ... (looking at the compass), 10 hours at 100 degrees, 4 hours at 104 degrees, and finally 2 hours at 98 degrees. This is an imaginary course for my ship, and I know you get the idea.

The only way, that I can reach my destination, ... is to have an exact plan, and work on it everyday!

This notion is so simple, that it frustrates me to no end, when I realize that it took so long for me to learn this.

Why do ships reach their "port of call"?

Ships reach their port of call, because they are piloted by men who follow precise courses to exact destinations!

My goals and destinations are much easier to reach now that I know where I am going.

Don't get me wrong, ... the ocean continues to have waves, ... the wind, the tides, the currents, and the reefs are all still there, but by following a precise course, I manage to reach more ports of call.

How Do You Navigate?

My voyages are not always easy and successful. They are rewarding and satisfying.

This is because I follow a precise course and travel on it every day!

Try it, it may even work for you!

I welcome all your comments, questions, and suggestions that will help me keep the wind in my sails.

I cannot change the direction of the wind, so I will adjust my sails.

Very few people knows what they really want. But then again, it is not anyone's fault to lack that knowledge simply because, from childhood to graduate schools all what they teach is to look what others have, to be competitive in getting what others have. Thinking that, we are all here to have the same things or travel the same road as everyone else.

It is okay to be competitive or wanting to have what others has had, but do it in a way that will not make you lose yourself, lose your mind in the process.

Sometimes you will know exactly what you want but getting there became difficult after trying every possible routes previously used. This difficulties are telling you to use completely, a different route or objectives to reach your desired goals.

You know it, Edi.
Cookie-cutter school.
Too many of us stayed too long.
Unfortunately, for me as well.
It just takes one small bug, to give you the big flu.
At least, now we know it and can do something about it.
Thanks for the wise comments.

It is important to know what are your goals, working without goals brings you nowhere.
Nice Post Like the I can not change the direction of the wind, so I will adjust my sails.

Thanks, Sylvia, for reading my post.
I'm happy that you enjoyed my "sailing philosophy".
It's interesting that the ship in my story was headed for Singapore.
Paul

Thanks, will be a long sail see you in Singapore

Lots of time to write.
A great niche, and lots of photos.
What more could I need?
Because I would be using wind power, I cannot be as confident as the captain in my story, of my ETA!

Thanks so much. Your post made my day.
I couldn't agree more. It pays to have goals and a plan in place to avoid being in that situation of going to work for the sake of having a job.

Thanks, Euphemia, for the kind words.
I'm happy to have brought some joy to your day.
Make it into something more for you and your loved ones.
Keep the wind in your sails.
Paul

Well said, Fleeky.
Thanks, for your response.

Thanks for sharing, Paul.

Welcome, Roger.
Thanks for dropping by.

No problem, Paul.

And some people spend the rest of their lives without even thinking about the possibility of wanting and having their wants. Society has drilled us to act like robots all the time. We even forget how to think for ourselves.

This content is very true.

So true, Nsoh.
That's why we have to keep reminding ourselves.
Negativity is "poisonous" to our dreams.
Never lose sight of your dream.
We must control our lives or someone else will do it for us.
Thanks, Paul.

This is true, exactly what it is, most people hate their job and are afraid to change, you hit the nail on the head, I agree 100%

Makes us very fortunate.
Let's take advantage of it.
Thanks, Gill.

What you have said is so true and relevant. I have found that keeping positive is the key. Keep your eye on the goal and imagine what it will like to reach it. That way, the law of attraction will kick in and help you. :)

Thanks, Gail for your response.
Being positive and seeing yourself reaching your goal is an excellent way to look at it as well.
Smiles always attract more smiles.
Paul

Absolutely :) :) :)

Smiles all around!
