Who really owns the internet?
The other night I got to thinking and when that happens... this is what happens.
- Who is really in charge of my website besides myself?
- How does the internet really work?
- Is there one single owner of the whole internet?
I never really just sat down and thought about any of these questions. Never really put any thought into it at all, really. It's just second nature in our society to plug into the internet, ask questions and enjoy the abundance of information provided. Also, with all of the Social media networks out there, there is so much information being "plugged in", shared etc... these platforms have gotten so HUGE, it is part of the everyday life of most people that have access to the "internet"!
So how do "they" keep track of all this?
I wondered who really has all our information that we provide over the internet? Is there some sort of massive storage dump?
The more I looked into this, the more fascinated I became. All I did was type into google search...Who Owns the internet?
You will not believe the abundance of results you will get when you type those words in. This is what you get: About 73,900,000 results!
I just clicked on the first site I saw and it was howstuffworks.com he explained it very clearly and understandable. As of this point I pretty much get it... Do your own search on this and I promise you will come out wiser. You can implement how it all works to make your website "work" better. You get a deep understanding, which is what I needed.
So if you are a geek like me... Which I'm guessing you are since you have your own website through Wealthy Affiliate. :-P Then you might want to check into this.
Like I said before, I just never really put any thought into it and many people probably already know the answers to these questions, I did not. I knew the gist of it though.
As of the last couple of years, I have been more computer "savvy". I am one of the "late bloomers". Brought up with antenna's for t.v's and a snail paced, huge computer. lol
Thought I would share.
Take Care.

I have been doing a flow chart of the internet mechanics. Put it on hold as there is so much information and I only want a basic chart for when I get confused (again). So this looks like very helpful information.
I had found out that people were getting mixed up with the terminology and that's what started it. So if I ever finish it may ease some others confusion too!
Funny you should be asking this question right at the time I was reading a research document on it. If you're as geeky as you appear it might give you more food for thought.
It's http://www.uni.edu/fabos/publications/searchanatomy.pdf
I'd love to know what you think of it.
Hey thanks for sharing. This is a lot of pages! I will definitely read it though. I save it. . :-)
The Internet is a global system of interconnected computer networks that use the standard Internet protocol suite (TCP/IP) to link several billion devices worldwide.
It is a network of networks that consists of millions of private, public, academic, business, and government networks of local to global scope, linked by a broad array of electronic, wireless, and optical networking technologies. No one owns it.
Great post. Most believe that the internet is the last free media.... Not so much. But it sure is nice to have friends in 46 (last count) nations... I know it all started with several universities linking their computers together..... Now I will go check out who owns it!
Thanks for inspiring me to learn something new ;)

And I do come from the generation which made me the TV remote. My dad said, "Freddy, go change the channel to 8," and I did....
We all own the internet some way or another. I believe that the governments and such have a big part to do with it though so I am on the fence about it all.
LOL yeah the antenna's with the foil wrapped around tops. Ugh
