Starting a Restaurant and Affiliate Marketing - It's all about starting a business

Picture yourself starting a restaurant. You love to cook. Maybe you love a specific type of cooking. And you think you can develop a passion for it.

So of course you go out, buy an empty store front.

Then you spend thousands of dollars on cooking equipment after spending 10 minutes browsing Amazon.

Then you create a menu off the top of your head.

Go to the grocery store and buy stuff.

Throw open the doors, and...

Yeah you get the idea. It won't work.

If you've never done this before, you go to culinary school. You get an apprenticeship in a restaurant. Maybe spend a little time traveling and trying other restaurants. Maybe get a business degree along the way.

Then maybe...

Get the idea?

What does this have to do with affiliate marketing?

A LOT.

People come in and say "This is easy money". Well it can be if you learn the ropes, find a place you love, and roll up your sleeves. It's not without effort. But it can be fun and so that makes it easy.

The hard part? Getting started, figuring out what works for you. Get a workflow, improve it.

Learn the jargon.

And the moving parts. Blog, Social Media, Video, email. There are a lot of them. It takes time.

And the hard part (yes there is one, but it's not THAT hard). What works for me won't necessarily work for you. And vice versa. For instance, I'm a techie, you are on Etsy.

But we can learn from each other. Parts of what work for you may work for me. If I listen and learn.

OK so where am I? I have been at this for a little over 18 months. Part time. More time learning than doing.

I made my first $ in 6 months.

I made my first $100 month in 16 months.

I will make my first $200 month after 18 months and make more sales than days for the first time (already did).

Very part time, remember? Maybe 10-15 hours a week.

What have I learned so far? You are building a funnel. A lot of people find you, Some come to you. A few like what you have so they evaluate the merchandise. Some of those buy.

So you need something that the search engines think people like. And people like. And once they like it, they buy. So you make money,

But there are other ways to make money too. So you diversify.

Hope this helps you get past the question "Can I make money with this?"

Yeah you can, but you need to figure it out.

Having a plan when starting any new business is paramount Michael...

Been there and done that in the restaurant business as well.... wasn't planned as much as would have liked it to have been... but at the end of the day it was the wife who couldn't handle the hours it took to run the business with me, so she wanted out!

Now... ten years later she is a global manager for a very big International Firm.... go figure??

Enjoy the rest of your week my friend and make it a productive one ok!! :-)

Michael, it's great to see your progress and how it is now accelerating. And it's good to know that you spent a lot of time mainly learning, because that's what I seem to be doing. But I keep reminding myself that knowledge is useless without action, so I try to balance the two and see how far I have got by the end of this year.

Wishing you lots more success,
Isabella

I do like this comparison, Michael.

Starting without a plan sounds like a disaster, whether it’s a restaurant or affiliate marketing. Learning, testing, and adjusting along the way makes all the difference.

I do think your progress is solid for part-time work—shows that sticking with it pays off.

All the best,

Boris

"Yeah you can, but you need to figure it out." -- I'll take that as my inspiration for the day. Thanks so much.

Everybody comes at this with different skills, goals, and constraints

So true, Michael!

In my story, I stumbled after the 6 month mark for several reasons, mostly time management. Regardless, I am gearing up for my second run at it and I will not quit!

Thanks for sharing!
