There is a new social media site that focuses on local markets in North America and it's called alignable.com and they may be more what you're looking for.

Hi, if you are referring to the name located in the upper right hand corner of your dashboard (and the author name for your posts)...
- In your dashboard, click on User (left side menu)
- Click on Your Profile
- In the Nickname section type the name you want
- Underneath in the display publicly drop down, select the name you just created.
- Click Update Profile at the bottom of the page to save.
