My Disastrous Experience With Mailchimp
My experience with MailChimp wasn't exactly what I thought it would be, let me just give you some background, you see when I started off I didn't necessarily have a following online in terms of social media; my Instagram was still building (in fact it still is), but this was during the beginning stages of building a following.
My twitter, well that's completely non-existent and still is to this day; I'm just not a fan. My LinkedIn is fully put together but I don't use it as much as I should do - I'm posting more content recently & my facebook is all set up now, but like the others it was still very new back then…..you get the drift.
I was just so focused on my business and on generating income alongside growing my Instagram (which seems to be just a real passion for me) I had heard that email marketing was the way to go & I could use my Instagram to get subscribers...win/win.
So I decided to sign up to mailchimp.
I quickly built up quite a decent little group of followers, they say you can have a pretty decent conversion rate with just 100 subscribers and I had a little less than that. A month later I decided to sign up to wealthy affiliate and began promoting WA through my email Marketing. It was so effective, I actually got my first three referrals pretty quickly. I signed up to wealthy affiliate October 2017, with three back to back referrals November of 2017 so it really didn't take long from sign up, to sharing the info and then getting my first few referrals.
I don't know if anybody else has experienced this with email marketing, but it is definitely the way to go and I believe that the conversion rate is 1 in 7, meaning for every 7 emails sent out there will be at least 1 conversion. My conversion rate was slightly higher, unfortunately this is where my experience with email marketing and Mailchimp began to crumble, leaving me with a bitter taste in my mouth to say the least.
HOW?
Mailchimp and the word 'affiliate' do not go hand in hand!
In fact they do not like anything to do with the word affiliate, which then makes it very difficult for anyone to promote wealthy affiliate or any affiliate marketing content for that matter.
WHAT HAPPENED NEXT?
I was blocked! 👀
I got an email saying that my account was suspended from promoting things that violated their terms of service. After many attempts to get my account back, it was never resolved and I lost all of my subscribers and content!!
The Alternative
Has anyone heard of mailpoet?
They don't seem to care if use the word 'affiliate' as long as you download the plugin and begin boosting their user rating.
Thank God, but now I'm building my subscriber base from scratch all over again. Thank you Mailchimp.
Conclusion:
Lesson 1: keep a seperate list of all your subscribers
Lesson 2: find another word for 'affiliate' in your email marketing if you use mailchimp or any other well known service

I also have bad experience with mailchimp as their system was not working for 6 months.
Must have been a wrong link, at least I must have missed out on subscribers and decided to find something better.
I do have a list of subscribers, just in case.
It is always handy to have a back-up instead of losing subscribers (and thus missing out on money).
WA should tell people not to use Mailchimp for affiliate marketing or MLM.
Both will have your account taken down.
Sumo was also not good for me; after 12 subscribers I got the message that I reached the maximum subscribers.
And it was a Chinese puzzle to find out how to send an email, every time my message was rejected.
I was trying freefollowup.com but had a problem getting the subscribe form to work.
After a few hours and no way to contact them, it was time to look for something else.
Mailoptin was also very limited; if I wanted to do something, I had to become a paid member.
I used Google and searched for free autoresponder with many results.
There must be something that is better than what I tried already.
I will try sendinblue, hoping they are better because I don't want to spend about $15 each month for paid services.
Hi,
Wow it really is amaze of trail and error. So far I've been using mailpoet for the past 14months, Ive used the word affiliate many times without any issues. But I'm also careful at times just in case.
Try mailpoet
We learn from our mistakes that is a fact, you are not the first or the last person to experience being blocked by Mail Chimp for what they consider SPAM.
What you could have done was taken all your subscribers and exported them to your computer for safekeeping and open another email account to sign back up with Mail Chimp.
What you must-do if you are using Mail Chimp is provide links to your blog posts to get people to your website, as long as you don't post any affiliate links you will be safe with Mail Chimp.
I am sorry to inform you one of your subscribers more likely turned you into Mail Chimp, and that is because as long as no one turns you in Mail Chimp has no idea you are inserting affiliate links because they can't keep track of everyone with an account the links they are inserting.
The same thing happened to me, so I know how it sucks but it is not always so bad starting over as long as you have your subscriber list.
I just used another email address and learned my lesson no affiliate links in my email newsletters
Jeff
definately lesson learned on all accounts. changed my strategy since with mailpoet and all is well for now.
Thanks Jeff!
That was a terrible experience. I never used Mailchimp but I had a similar experience when Facebook unpublished my page because according to them I was making false claims about affiliate marketing! I was mad when I thought of all the false claims many Facebook users make each day!
I am happy that you appraised us of your experience though. It will help us to make informed decisions with relation to Mailchimp!
I wish you all the best.
Claudia
Thanks Claudia.
It really is a pot luck on social media or any online platform, that doesn't seem to understand the terms. Whats funny is, facebook happily allow for affiliates if you're paying for an ad. I've seen many just this week.....I think there's a loophole they forgot to mention. Lol.
My pleasure, always glad to share the accomplishments and the challenges. Its all a learning process.
Marie
I was blocked from Facebook for posting affiliate links in the past, you must learn to practice posting your blog posts instead of your affiliate links on Facebook.
Twitter you can post affiliate links without getting your hands slapped, I just thought I would share that in case anyone wanted to know where they can post affiliate links without getting banned or blocked
I really dislike Facebook myself, but I use it for business because it is good for branding
Jeff
Thank you Jeff! Now, that is something to remember! Social media on a whole is not my cup of tea...its a means to an end. I keep forgetting to post my blogs there.....it's my age I guess!
Thanks again and all the best!
Claudia
A good habit is to use your social share buttons on your website to post your blog right after you publish it, and if you don't have any social share buttons yet I do recommend them for your readers and for your own convenience to post on your social media sites
Jeff
I am more than happy to help as many members as I possibly can, so many times there are simple and easy solutions to our problems but we just overlook them being so overwhelmed
Jeff
Yep Mailchimp closed us down in our Pilates studio when we offered an up sell of some grip socks at the bottom of our information pages for a challenge we were running - and the link was to us, not an affiliate page.
They definitely do not like affiliate marketers - Constant Contact will shut you down for the same thing.
Aweber never gives me any grief
Seriously! That's just ridiculous, then they ask you to appeal and never get back to you. #lessonlearned
Aweber turned me down for some reason, but I have found a freemium alternative
You are absolutely right, I made an appeal years ago and never heard a word back from them. Yet they kept sending me emails like I was in good terms with them, we are in a crazy business for sure.
Jeff
yeah, I never bothered appealing - Truth be told I still use it (under a different email address) for plain monthly newsletters for my wife's coaching business.
Funny about Aweber - what is your niche?

I`m joining this conversation late. I`m sorry you had this experience but thank you so much for sharing the lessons learnt.
I would like to set up an email pop up to create a list and then use it for marketing. What is the best system currently. From what you say, I`m assuming Mail Chimp is Persona Non Grata for WA members,
So is it Mailpoet? Mailerlite? Or is there another system that is now recommended?
It would also be good to have a relatively consistent recommendation from WA and perhaps some specific training as I think lots of newer members find this less than straightforward.
I have been searching for training today. Can anybody in this chain recommend the best practice email system? Free if at all possible, and ideally some clear training? I thought I saw a reference to Jay doing some training on this but couldn`t find it. His training is usually excellent.
Thanks so much
I asked this question recently and there were some great replies based around the systems that WA members have been choosing lately. Hopefully it helps you as well to decide which one to go for :-) Which autoresponder do you use and why? Also, once you do decide, make sure that you set up your DKIM & SPF Records to help with email deliverability :-) New WA Feature For 3rd Party Autoresponders
Thanks Chrys. I will chaeck that now.
Thanks Abie. Appreciated.
Chrys, please excuse this really stupid question, but which plugin do you use for Aweber or Get Response? There seem to be so many of them. Do you need to register on their webs-site and then get a supporting plug in? Thanks in advance for your advice. Best Regards, Trevor
I have an AWeber account and then I use the Forminator plugin which sends the details to AWeber via the API
Thanks so much Chrys.
