Writing Business Reviews

For the past few days I have been working on my niche websites, but my Wealthy Affiliate site was on the top of my to do list... but i couldn't get past the to do part. Writing business reviews about businesses that I have not had first hand experience about is not something that I relished the thought about doing. I want to share how i overcame my qualms concerning this matter.

I decided to use my social networks, created a facebook group, a twitter account, and contacted those who I knew had home based businesses and invited them to help me write their business review. I promised them that I would not criticize their business and they get a spot on my website... a page with their review. They understood that my WA business stood on the top as number one and I asked them for nothing in return but the chance to put their content on my site.

It is my belief that there will be a good side effect to this. They will be provided with the link that their business review is on to give to their customers. The good side to this is the traffic that will be coming to my website will increase simply because they will want to share their good review with their potential customers. And in doing so, they will have an opportunity to see my number one business review and hopefully like what they see and become referrals!

I don't usually give away my good ideas... but hey. We're a team and I want you all to be successful! I still have to write the reviews... but so far people are liking what they see and I haven't had anyone say no, yet. The thing that some people can't get past is that there is no catch to this... but as long as you are honest and fair you will help them get past that initial fear.

Good luck everyone!

Interesting approach but I do hope it's all with people you know and trust. If you haven't experienced the business first hand, what if it IS bad. They won't say, "we're bad at....." Then you've endorsed a business that perhaps you wouldn't have if you'd seen it first hand. Just my thought. I'm all for your success.

Its a great idea. I may see how I can apply it to my own business as well. I hope it turns out to be very successful for you!

It sounds like a pretty decent approach. I hope you get good results from it

Thank you smoore! I'll keep you posted!

perhaps you can look at other online business offering work at home opportunities and give your opinion and a overview of how it works, for it you happen to mention a business and it is a friend for instance and something negative has happened it could reflect on you, wish you every success

Hi April - Like Eddy I would be concerned that you're not 'reviewing' if you're not saying anything that is a 'con', 'weakness' , 'area for improvement' call it what you like. In my view that's the only way to give a balanced review. Also what are you going to do if someone runs a business you wouldn't care to be associated with on your site? It's your right to accept who you like, but if you have made it a kind of open invitation you could run into trouble. Proceed with caution. :) Beverley

I understand what you are saying. But I am completely going to be in control of who's business is on the site and what is written in the review. The only way for anyone's business to be reviewed and put on my site is through me and it will follow the same format as any other review. But I'd rather learn about the business by someone in it and by hearing their take on it than by my own picking and choosing what is a pro or a con about it. I understand that people will be trying to sell their business with lots of positive... they will be well aware that cons are part of the review. What I meant by not critiquing their site is I will not be personally slamming their business after inviting them to tell me or my readers about it. It's kind of like the captain of a unit's open door policy. I'm giving them an open door moment so to speak. But It's still my turf and I'm the one in control. The jury will be up when people who go to the site clearly see that Wealthy Affiliate has an amazing offer that is stupid to turn down... if your into that kind of thing that is.

And thank you for the advice Beverley! :)

Very good idea. Thanks a lot
John

Hey April, That's an interesting way of approaching reviews. But this could be an issue. Every business has bad points and to promise that you won't criticize their business limits you. Part of providing value with your reviews is to give your readers the pros and cons of a company. If you're not giving the cons and just painting one picture it's more of a promo for that other business.

That said just because you're pointing out some of the bad points of a company doesn't mean you're trashing it. You're just giving your visitors a complete picture so folks can make an educated decision. So just keep that in mind. I've written many reviews like this and folks appreciate it.

Either way, I'm happy to see you taking action and sharing with your fellow WA members!

Thank you for the insight, Eddy.. I've considered that as well and what I'm doing now is an experiment of sorts. I have another website ... the first one that I created www.itsmomsbusiness.org that I will be posting those types of reviews on. Again though.. I do run into the problem of creating the reviews without having had first hand experience... I was a part of a couple of businesses that I can make good reviews for off the top of my head... I just don't feel comfortable with writing reviews for ones that I haven't been involved with yet... I will try to write those kinds of reviews tomorrow to see if I can make them sound legit. How do you get past that. That's like writing a review about a song you've never heard before.

Eddy I do really appreciate your feedback and any constructive criticism. I hope you don't mistake my questions back to you as anything other than positive. By the way.. you have a twin in WNY... if you go to our restaurants facebook page www.facebook.com/thecornercoffeehouse and flip through the photos you can see a pic of him. He's Steve Davis and plays an awesome piano and keyboard. He's a good friend of ours... I can't help but notice the similarity between you two. Incredible!

You're welcome April. I understand your concern. I originally only reiewed companies I had first hand experience with. But that is very limiting. I quickly learned how to just research companies by reading other reviews, visiting the company's website, reading others comments and seeing complaints online. By combining all those data points, i can usually come up with a nice balanced review.

That's pretty much reporters do. So that's the approach you can take too. But you can build up to that. Do what makes your comfortable first.
Again, I'm happy you're taking action.

By the way, I can somewhat see the similarity between Steve and I. LOL

Excellent idea! Never would have thought of that one, but then I don't know anyone in IM except the ones I know here and they would be writing for their own sites.

I have a possible referral coming to this site now because of my request online on facebook. What I did was made sure there were a couple of pages set up to show people what I am looking for in their review. I even included the format I will be using to give them a general idea of the outline of the review... and another post to invite people to give me their business information with my contact info. The keywords you generate for their page will have to be reflecting content on the actual page as well to point people to their review. More people coming to the site the better. even if you don't know anyone, you can flush them out simply by putting the right pages or posts on your site and keywords too. I hope this gives you some insight. Good luck! Here is the site I have started to give you a general idea. www.itsyourbusinessnow.siterubix.com. I will be updating to my own domain in a few days when I have the funds.
