Do it for yourself
Build for yourself, not for anyone else. If you build it as a hobby, a place for your own personal growth, a place that you want to visit because it improves your day, and I mean this in the sense that it generates no income, period. Then you will not be disappointed, if you don't become disappointed then you can not become discouraged thus allowing you to place your best into this site, because it is for you.
I think at this point, you will draw attention to your page, because if it's truly special to you, then others will gravitate towards your page as well, because everyone likes being apart of something unique and special.
So forget the money, if it makes you happy than you are already compensating yourself daily.
