The Big Picture of Niche Blogging - Defined
Are you struggling with the idea of creating a successful online business? Maybe it is your perspective that is holding you back.
When you look at your website, what do you see? A random assortment of posts linking to Amazon? A collection of affiliate products you’re hoping will take off? A website that is struggling to make an impact? You don't seem to be getting anywhere.
Sometimes, a simple shift in how you view your website can change everything. Let's consider your website as a Boutique Storefront for a moment.
Welcome to the Mall of the World
Did you know the online marketplace is worth $6 trillion, with 2.6 billion active shoppers?
Think about it, every time you make an online purchase, someone is earning a commission. You might be buying from a major retailer like Amazon or a boutique shop on Etsy, but behind the scenes, someone’s business is making a commission or selling a product.
The Mall of America
Let’s take the Mall of America as an example. It is a massive structure with 500+ stores, 15,000 employees, and even its own ZIP code. Each store has its own salespeople providing you with information and reasons to purchase their products. Just like your website attempts to provide information and reasons to purchase from you.
Now, picture this mall multiplied infinitely, with every single niche and product imaginable represented.
This is the Mall of the World. It is a limitless virtual marketplace where Walmart, Costco, Etsy, Shopify, and millions of smaller businesses coexist. A space where every blog, store, or website is a storefront, yours included. This is the marketplace where entrepreneurs like you try to earn a slice of the $6T pie.
By joining the online business community, you are announcing to the world that you want to open your storefront here as well. So, what "boutique storefront" are you trying to establish in the Mall of the World? Remember, you’re not competing with the Walmarts and Targets of the world. It’s not about selling everything to everyone—it’s about selling something specific that people care about. Your boutique must be unique to get noticed.
Your Store in the Mall
What is your niche? Is it unique? This is where life online gets complicated. Your goal is to find a niche that you enjoy, create content around stuff you like, and lead people from your content to the marketplace where they can shop.
To draw the crowd in you need to be innovative. Think creatively about how to solve problems for your audience. Who doesn't like a solid solution to a PITA problem? What problem did your last online purchase solve?
There is an old saying that will always be true. The only constant is change. Google and SEO are evolving in order to cater to everyone. As they change, you will need to do the same. You will need to be adaptable to stay ahead of trends and be willing to evolve your strategies.
Free Advertising
If you were to open a new bookstore on First & Main, would you do it quietly or would you look to get the word out to as many people as you may know, and encourage your friends and family to spread the word as well? You have free advertising at your fingertips. It is social media. Use it to announce your Grand Opening in The Mall of The World.
The Mall of the World is open 24/7, and billions of shoppers are traversing its corridors. They are seeking solutions to life's problems. You need to explain how your solution fulfills the need. The opportunities are endless, but the key to success lies in creating a unique storefront that offers your ideas, your solutions, and is attractive enough to entice people to enter.
When I land on your website for the very first time, will I know what you are offering?

Thank you Don! Most interesting post first thing in the morning. Mall of the World is a perfect way to describe the online world. I’m actually visualizing myself walking through the mall.
I’ve been asking that exact question as you stated at the beginning —” When you look at your website, what do you see?” There’s 2 different sides I see:
Site #1 Weight loss site
1. Homepage(store front)
- See an image of a person tying shoe and getting ready to run
- See the words Fitness/Nutrition/Mindset and Motivation
- Sign says “ Fit for Life: Motivation for the Everyday Athlete at Any Age”
2. Inside
- Many informational blog posts relating various topics to weight loss and living a healthy lifestyle
- Recommended products or services throughout
Main problem: Getting people to come in after being open for 10 months
-Optimizing SEO for organic traffic
-Promoting on Socials
-sharing w friends and fellow entrepreneurs everywhere
-send out emails to similar contemporaries for possible guest posting
-writing on platforms like Qwoted and Featured to get backlinks
-guest appearances on podcasts(coming soon in Jan 2025)
98.4% is direct traffic according to Site Kit
Thanks, Steve, I saw myself walking through The Mall of The World as well when I was writing this.
Your website sounds visually appealing. But as you describe it, you need your visitor to have enough curiosity to open the door.
This is something that I am grappling with. Landing page versus blog roll.
I rotate the top four posts, I keep these 4 posts sticky for a reason. It is what is inside. The title of each post is created as the center of my universe. It gives you great insight without looking for it.
The landing page option is like having a doorman (landing page) offer me a taste of what's inside.
I created a landing page post and published it last night. It has not made it to my "Home Page" - YET! The thought behind a landing page.
For a landing page to succeed, A landing page would have a Solid Title that tells you what your focus is, a subtitle with the problem, and a quick 30-second sales pitch that gives you the Result/Outcome of investing time on my site. Here is what I just posted last night.

People like buttons.
Hope this helps you see a way to get more people into your blog.

I think that’s a wonderful and very creative landing page. I will need to update mine now. 😃
Right now, my button says “ Check out the Blogs”. 😬
This blog is such a great visualization and something I’ve been waiting to read. Thank you for sharing.
Steve
I guess so….I thought of it as a cover to a book. Both my sites are set up like this. My guitar site has a button that says ‘Enter here for content”
Ha, so I’m using a landing page and I didn’t even know it. 😂
Thank you, Don.
Great post
I have been here at WA for a while but still do not have my website live. The old saying is, " I can't see the timber for the trees." LOL. The training here at WA is superb.
I have a website under maintenance with a GPP starter theme but I have difficulty customising it. Hopefully, I will have it live soon. I have ideas in the Travel niche.
Cheers
Denis
Denis,
Did you have a chance to read GeneratePress is Boring = What Theme Should I Use? The main takeaway is to find theme training first. I found the Blocksy theme was intuitive for me and stuck with it for all 4 websites that I run.
This post has a list of themes that are highly customizable and fast.
If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Thank you Don
I didn't see your previous post, unfortunately.
It has given me so much to learn & act upon.
Hopefully, I will have a nice website operational very soon.
Thanks again
Denis
Thanks Howard,
I was trying to answer a question that I saw earlier today and this is what I came up with.
Don
Yes, I love to welcome people because it makes them feel relaxed. Go to my health website and explore.
Have a Happy Sunday.

Sami,
I appreciate the comment. It all started as a simple question to help a person understand the vision of an online business.
It was a fun exercise. I am glad you liked it.
