GeneratePress is Boring = What Theme Should I Use?
I have seen this question come across Questions at least once a month. I have threatened to answer this at least a dozen times. This "To-Do" is now off my list.
Within the halls of Wealthy Affiliate, one of the biggest time wasters, in the beginning, is Choosing A Theme. We have all been there. I spent nearly a full week playing with the 1000s of themes that we have available to us. What did it get me? A wasted week. But why do we do this?
GeneratePress has been the default within the WordPress ecosystem since its launch. It is the go-to theme for website developers and owners craving SPEED. Site hosts prefer to load this theme by default for its SIZE. Tom Usborne, the developer behind GeneratePress, designed it with a focus on size, speed, usability, and clean code. This stripped-down theme has had everything removed for the sake of SIZE, SPEED, and SEO Rankings.
Developers keep recommending GeneratePress for TWO reasons. It's hard to mess up minimalistic code making compatibility issues and security easy to control. Think Pure Vanilla Yogurt. Deceptively fast vanilla yogurt. But yogurt nonetheless.
GeneratePress Is Boring
Some people love minimalistic. If you do, GeneratePress is for you. Don't be fooled, you can spruce it up IF you learn Elementor, Beaver, or Brizy, but why? For the rest of us, blah. Show me something, anything else.
To prevent you from wasting precious hours and days, let me give you a shortcut that is bound to ease you into life as a blogger.Alternatives to GeneratePress
Before I go into the alternatives, what are our criteria for selecting another theme?
- Speed - Search for Themes with the fastest load times
- Size - The theme "footprint" needs to be small and without bloatware
While the first 2 criteria are key to great ranking, I will prioritize easily eliminating "The Plain". - Customizability - Can you dress up plain Jane and make her beautiful?
- Training - I am a visual learner. Does YouTube have good training?
- Price - Free is always better. Does the free version have all of the functionality I want?
I am driven by items 3 -5. I am going to eliminate 995+ themes right off the top. Many themes are bloated with add-ons that are not needed, poorly coded with known compatibility issues, are only customizable if you pay for the upgraded versions, and do not have training. Who better to assist with this task than my Chatty Assistant?
My selections below in No Particular Order are all fast, small, customizable, and have extensive online training. The reviews and why I recommend them are below the list.

GeneratePress is one of the best WP themes I've ever worked with. The default install might look "boring", but that's just the base theme. As with most other themes, you can make GeneratePress look pretty much any way you want using only the WP block editor. There are also some additional block elements GeneratePress provides, along with their GenerateBlocks plugin for even more versatility. The pro version is not needed, but does add some features along with access to their huge Site Library of beautiful templates.
I am considering something other than GeneratePress. This post gave me some ideas to explore. Thanks for sharing.
Nancy
Glad to hear Nancy,
Hope I was able to shorten your exploration time to keep you productive.
Don
You did. I hate choosing themes because as you said, you waste a lot of time. This helps tremendously.
You actually don't even need Elementor, Beaver, or Brizy or anything else to build Generate Press into anything you want it to be. Its customizability is only limited by your imagination. 👍🏼 All of the wordpress customization tutorials I've done are using the free version of Generate Press. 💯
I use the paid version, and have even more options to beautify the look and design of any website, even my e-commerce site.
I had problems with Astra and OceanWP because they offered too many options, especially with their kits.
GeneratePress press also has a kit library to handle just about every type of website.
Plus I DO use Elementor.
Rudy
I think back in the day Elementor was a major player because of the drag and drop ability which was light years ahead of the classic editor, but now with the block editor you can do so much so easily by default. Either way, GP is a solid theme. Been very impressed with it the deeper I went.
I agree...that's when I started using Elementor. I don't use it the same way, had yo adjust some things because they have advances so many options, plus they now incorporate Ai, hosting, etc.
Rudy
Eric,
My first experience with GP was here. I was never able to get GP to look like what I wanted it to. This lack of knowledge and plain Jane appearance set me off "In Search Of" a new theme.
Based on the number of times that this question came up, I knew that I was not the only one to feel this way. Hence this post after a year of putting it off.
As a"Block Builder," I found my comfort level with Blocksy.
GP has a great and dedicated following, You cannot go wrong with any of these themes.
The bottom line is that time is precious, so stick to trying the tested 3-5 themes that most of us use, versus taking a week and testing 1000s on your own.
Thanks, Eric for the guidance on GP. It is appreciated.
Don
I should try GP too! Because of its simplicity I assumed this might not be flexible or good as much as astro!

This post has a lot to offer when it comes to choosing the "right" theme for the website. As for me, I have gained all my knowledge about "Themes" through this WA platform. I was tempted to switch themes, but, at that time, didn't know or feel confident to do it.
Thank you for the very good info MrDon.
Your welcome. This is a question that gets kicked around a lot. You really can't go wrong with a blog using GP, Astra, Kandence, or Blocksy. It comes down to comfort level with customizations and liking what you see. I added OceanWP for storefront sites, and Neve for mobile centric sites.
Enjoying the journey.

Very awesome Don. When you love what you do, every day becomes an adventure filled with purpose.
