a clear new look at leadership

Sometimes we have to step back. We also need to enlarge and magnify our perspective in order to break out of routine doldrum thinking.

Take leadership for instance. Some 4 years ago I was of the mindset that leaders should act aggressively. I looked at the process as more of a military action. Leading and charging aggressively from the front in a forward leaning direct charge.

I learned the hard way that a kinder gentler approach penetrates and converts. Basically this is centered around laudatory examples!

The model shown here mimics basic math.

  • Eliminate (subtract) from the equation
  • Raise (add) to the equation
  • Reduce (divide) into the level
  • Create (multiply) the level

In choosing the four operations, all are necessary at one time or another. From a standpoint of profitable operation, the multiplication creation option appears best

This is well to think about in our operations here. What do you think?

In all things, it is better to be honest and above board. Do not give me a 6 for a 9, because I will not trust you.

Keep the faith.

Maxine

On the money as usual Mike!
After many years in sales I found the honest personal approach always worked best for me. I never wanted to come across as the pushy type, it just wasn’t the real me.
If you aren’t authentic people know it.
Here at WA it will show in your writing.

Hi Michael. I worked in the banking industry and was told that i needed to be more aggressive with my staff. It didn't matter that my "gentler" approach got results. Jim

That kind of management doesn't go far!

Good Morning Mike,

All this is important but what happens if there is no intelligence to start with?

Greetings from the south of Spain, Taetske

p.s. did you see my 2 for 1 post?

Good Morning Mike,

Here comes the link Still enjoying summer weather here, 30C, not bad.

Have a nice Sunday, Taetske

This is where leadership training comes in. You have as a trainer to recognize what teachable points there are. The alternative is that some people are unteachable.

Exactamente!

Saludos del Sur, Taetske

Saludos del norte EU Miguel!

It all comes together in the center...

Good reminders about the importance of self-evaluation; tracking what’s working and what’s not. Interesting how you related it to mathematics operations. Thank you for sharing.

Leadership is always one of those curly questions, it is kind of a mixture of the four things mentioned, above all, it is knowing what needs to be done and having the conviction to take the steps that are needed to create the outcomes that are desired, even in the face of challenges, creating new possibilities where others only see, negative outcomes, another food for thought post Mike.

Thank you Alex

Hey Mike -- :)

*(where's your anime? ... was just getting used to seeing it from Guac-a-mole! ... kidding... got such a kick outta of it ... lol ... )

Anyway, back to the subject of leadership --- so many facets --- and of course, one needs to differentiate it from 'management' .... leaders vs managers discussion ...

It's been studied to bits and still is --- very much an age old question through time memorial ...

... too heavy a topic after the Jay show -- brain hurts ... lol ...

... enjoy a wonderful weekend, cheerio ... :)

Yes I agree with the softer approach. When people know you care, they care :)

Hi Michael
