How will I make money, what will I sell?
I think the question of what to sell has stumped a lot of people when they are trying to think of a niche. Often, you will have something you love doing so much and could talk about till the cows come home, yet can't see a direct connection between that and the money.
Please - stop thinking about the money.
The money will come. First - always first is step 1. Set up your website around your niche. Make your niche something you are interested in, are passionate about, love! Do it anyway. Often, it's not until we have started to explore it that we come up with a direction we went to take the site in - and then where the money will come from.
Some people are madly in love with apple ipods. Great, then do that niche and you have a direct product connection. Some are passionate about grandma Mabel's baking, awesome but not such an obvious product connection. So this is where you get creative. What does baking involve? Cook books, mixers, spoons, cute little aprons, cake pans..... the list goes on. And not everyone into baking wants functional items. Some want romantic, 1950s aprons because it makes them feel like June Cleaver. They don't want to be June Cleaver, they just want to have the romance of feeling like they are her when they bake.
What if your niche is family friendly holidays? Not many people are going to give you money for promoting their holiday destination. That's OK. You write about the destinations and the theme parks because that gets your readers in. But you promote holiday related items - suitcases, backpacks, child friendly cameras, waterproof tents, gps watches for the kids so parents don't have to worry about them getting lost, hats, life saving vets..... you get the picture.
It's not as simple as niche is A so sell A. It's more like niche is A so sell B, C, D, E, F.......
Do your niche on what you love. Put up posts on your website. Then think about what needs people who are interested in this might have.

Definitely some great advice there . I am fairly new to this , and you gave me some great ideas .
Thanks Michelle. Just getting started and with so much info to consider, your blog helps focus on one part of the big picture.
Michelle, great ideas. People just look at the money end and not much else. Thanks for sharing. Debbie
Excellent post. You've got me thinking I ought to dig back out a site I started some time back, but dropped because I didn't think there'd be that much money in it. But when I start to consider some of the ancillary items I might tie in, there's a chance it could fly. Pun intended, because the site is real niche... having to do with modeling, painting and several other aspects of First World War aeroplanes.
And yeah, I'm quite passionate about it.
OMG!! Yes!! bring it back. That is a huge niche within model planes, cars, etc. You could recommend products you've tried yourself, books on the subject, brands of paint and paint brushes... magnifying lamps for the fiddly bits. the list goes on.
Perfect Michelle! Just what was needed as there are a lot of our associates who are focused on the end and not the process...
Thank you, yes, I've been seeing the 'deer in the headlights' panic with a lot of people, which is why I felt this was needed.

This is definately something that I've been dealing with. I'm really passionate about my niche, but there's not an obvious big ticket product to sell.
So I'm using my first month to really focus on creating content, finding my voice and getting comfortable with writing.
Great post and something every newbie should definately read.
Thank you :) I believe there is something that can be sold for every niche, we just have to take out time to think about it. Glad I could help.
