A Word Of Warning About Bing Ads

I had a shock today.

Since happily setting up my Bing Ads account and starting my first ad yesterday after watching WA's bootcamp lesson on the subject, what happened next I wasn't expecting!

I set, what I thought was my £20 a day budget for my ad.

Today, I checked my account hoping to see some clicks and yes, indeed, there were but only after a spend of £271.47.

Ouch!

What happened? Well, thanks to a lovely Mircrosoft call centre lady called Andrea explained it all to me, this is why my daily amount when skyrocketing. So, now I am going to share it with you so you don't make the same mistake.

Keep away from Enhanced CPC. If you go for this when you are considering expanding your ad reach, be very careful. What you are doing is giving Bing the right to run away with your bank account.

Make sure you stick within your budget and this includes your keyword bids too. Stick to 0.05 if you can at first. It won't get you a huge amount of clicks but if you do your research on your keywords, you should find plenty that will have little competition and will therefore, be lower in cost.

This is another point I need to make where you can go over your budget or at least, what you THINK you have confirmed to be your budget and what happens, is that Bing charge the maximum amount on the enhancement.

There are certain boxes along the process where you are allowing Bing to override your budget.

So, even if you can clearly see that your supposed budget is say, £20.00 a day, Bing will ignore that if you have clicked anything more than the normal CPC setting and charge you hundreds.

Be careful!

Thanks for the timely warning. I hope you got some return for your money.

Thanks for the warning. Am in the process of setting up my campaign and I think this is really helpful.

Thanks for the warning Michelle. I am considering to start with Bing and this is really helpful:)

Awesome post, Michelle.

One way to truly limit your budget on Bing Ads is to use PayPal to pre-pay for your ads. So let's say you're looking at $100 per month as your budget. You pre-pay $100 to Bing Ads from your PayPal account. If something goes haywire and all your budget gets used in one day, they'll suspend your ads until you reload your account. That way you never go over.

Now that was a great post, thank you Michelle!!!

Michelle, thanks for the heads up about Bings Ad's.

Thanks for the warning! Sorry for this, I hope you will have some profit from the clicks too, Michelle

Good post. Unfortunately you found out about Bing the hard way. I have $100 of free bing ads when I want to use it. The free ads are a loss leader in getting you to sign up for more expensive ads. I thought that was the case with Bing, now I know. I won't use the ads unless I have too to attract traffic. Thank You for the heads up!

Hi Michelle, that was quite an overspend and must have been a massive shock. Luckily you logged in when you did or it could have been a lot worse..ouch. Thanks for sharing. All the best, Anthony

Ouch is right, thanks for the heads up!
