Three Stars And A Wish
Hi Guys,
Here's something I know to be true from my mathematics teaching days:
The best way I can teach you to sketch a quadratic function is by telling you the things you're doing wrong and give you the reasons you're doing them wrong. If I tell you you're doing great and let the wrong things slide, you're never going to sketch that parabola right
So, here's my annoying situation of the day:
Whenever I go to website feedback, I'll give feedback that tells the person 3 or 4 things they can improve on their site.
What I get back is something like:
'I love your site, I love your colours, I love the pictures, love love love love love.. did I mention I love your site?'
and, well I love my site too and I'm super proud of what I've created but it's not perfect; in fact it's very far from perfect and I actually want people to tell me why it's NOT perfect. Tell me it sucks if you think it sucks becuase then I can make it better!
I go on site feedback because I WANT some pointers on how to do BETTER
So, I'm going to put on my teacher hat on and teach you something we learned about in a professional development session one day. It's called:
THREE STARS AND A WISH!
So, essentially, you tell the person three good things (stars) about their site and then give them one thing you wish was better.
Personally, I'd rather one star and three wishes but I know I'm a bit of a negative Nelly and I've learned the hard way that most people like positive reinforcement far more than constructive feedback.
Anyway,
that's my two cents worth for today!
Have a great weekend
Marketa ;)

I agree that site comments should critique the website Marketa.
I have had some great critiques but also ones like those you mention.
It's not helpful at all when people tell you they love everything about it. Quite frankly, if they do, then they have no comment to make and should move on to another one.
I love this idea also! Unfortunately, I’m having a hard time giving people the right criticism because of my experience here. Honestly I’m not sure what to look for when looking at someone’s site. Which makes it tough for me to put my site out there for comments, when all I can return to them is oooh pretty colours, I like that. Lol! Should I refrain from that section all together?

I agree with a combination of positive and critical feedback. I always start with the things I like, and then try to add at least 2 things I don't. Even if it is spelling errors, broken links etc. It can be hard sometimes though when you see that english is their second language.
