Don't Leave My Site!
Short and quick reminder to help some of you not make a mistake I used to make repeatedly when I started adding links to my websites.
I would simply highlight my text, go the link symbol, click it and be done and be so proud that I just added a link to my site and effectively DROVE SOMEONE AWAY FROM MY SITE!
I'm not sure what the circumstance would be, and I'm sure there's plenty, but for most of us, when we add a link to our site make sure you click the button that says 'open link in new window/tab'. (For external links. Internal links you more or less don't have to unless the internal page you're linking to doesn't have a menu).
I can't count the number of times that I've been on other people's sites, clicked on a link and was swiftly taken far away from the site that person worked so hard to get me to in the first place. And remember, I was guilty of doing this so I'm not preaching here.
So when you're adding links to your posts/pages, UNLESS you want to send people away from your site or post, CLICK THE OPEN IN NEW WINDOW/TAB button!

I m not that far into it...so glad you posted this before I get there, likely will avoid some frustration. Thanks Matt!
Thanks Matt .. I always open in another window .. and it is a good point. Cheers, William.
Good advice. I don't quite understand what you mean but when I get to that level , I will remember that Matt.
Hi Cherry, Thanks. Say you're typing a new blog post and you want to put one of your affiliate links somewhere in the body of your text. If you highlight a word, then go to your menu bar you'll see a link symbol. When you hit that link symbol a window will pop up where you can paste your affiliate link in. In that same window will be a box you can click that says 'open link in new window'. When clicked, when someone hits the link in the body of your text a new window will open up sendiing someone to your affiliate product/service. Because a new window opened, your original post window will still be in front of the person you worked so hard to get to your site. Hope that helped!
when I put links in---it's usually to a specific article on my site or another personal website of mine
Cool...funny how this simple little step (linking to your own sites, etc.) can be so important but so many people neglect to do it. Including myself sometimes.
I'm on several sites listed as a career life coach like Talk to An Expert where clients can sign up for my services---after reading this post I'm going to find a way to link those to my article and click open in another window now so I can increase my client base
