Namecheap.com has the website name I want but it costs $488 to purchase! Wealthy Affiliates says to go to namecheap.com and it should be around $10 annually. What can I do?
Be flexible the name should only cost between $1 and $15
What name are you looking at Melissa?
Maybe I can help.
Agreed.
Some domains will cost a lot more because of several reasons.
-Currently owned domains for sale
-High demand keywords in domain
-One word domains tend to cost more
As Ken said, be flexible, and tell us what you were looking for :-)
It's probably someone else's domain who wants to sell it for that price. You will need to come up with a new one that no one has got for $10.
I had the same issue, so I actually came up with a different name, but had to go with .net instead of .com Try changing to .net

You're looking at a domain that someone else has alresdy registered, and is willing to sell.
Come up with a domain name that is new, never been registered. Then it's $10.
Find a different domain name. You shouldn't pay more than $11 and change for a domain name.

Karl, not to correct you but to drive home a point.
The $10.87 you paid was for a .com domain name.
The website you build on it will be worth way more
than $10.87. That is the potential for everyone.
The website could be worth thousands.
