Should I Send An Email? - Day 7
30 Days To Crush Email Marketing!
Day 7
Should I send An Email?
Hello and good afternoon..I am posting a little latter than normal today as it is Saturday. So today marks the one quarter stage of my 30 Day Email Marketing Challenge.. woohoo!
I don't mind admitting that trying to find the time to post on a daily basis is quite a tall order to meet. Especially as I work a 24 hour shift rota...but as I get into this habit...it is slowly becoming part of my daily routine...and I am finding it rather rewarding.
We spoke yesterday regarding the elements involved which go into making a good email and also the best way to go about writing one.
Today, I want to talk about a common question that new email marketers ask themselves ... how often should I mail to my list?
The generic answer is always... probably a lot more often than you are doing at present :) But of course this will depend on many different factors.
How much useful information do you have to share?
What are your readers actually expecting from you?
To an extent, the competitors in your chosen niche can have an effect on your final decision making process. If the majority of them are sending out a weekly newsletter, then that’s probably a good place to start yourself.
Note that I said it’s a good place to start. This doesn’t mean you can't change that particular format and/or schedule at a later date. The frequency and format used to send emails is something that you will try and adjust over time. Like all things marketing, it can be trial and error getting things to a level that works for you and that you are happy with.
Some audiences will appreciate shorter, more frequent emails, while others may want no more than one email from you per week. We most probably all belong to email lists whether on purpose or not...it is an unavoidable trait in this day and age...so we all know that the emails we receive from list owners are varied in format and frequency.
Have you noticed that they all do something very interesting..they establish a routine with you...where you learn to expect an email from them in your inbox on a certain day at a certain time. Often, we will then form a habit..and not think twice about opening it!
Clever hey?
But don't be scared if you want to change your mailing frequency at any point. The criteria always remains the same...that is It’s always about setting and meeting your subscribers expectations...if you remember that you will never go far wrong.
If you get your readers used to one or two emails from you per month, then there is no doubt that’s what they’ll come to expect from you. If you try and change this... they will resist! Therefore, if emailing more frequently is your goal or maybe something that you want to test, my advice is to start slowly.
Initially go from one or two emails per month to four. Then email every Monday and throw in the occasional additional email. Keep increasing your frequency and allow your readers to get used to the new schedule before you increase again..and keep going until you find the frequency you’re comfortable with.
When we first set out on our journeys to become Internet Marketers and learn new skills..we tend to throw all our efforts into it...and lets be honest...we see very little monetary return for quite some time! But as you become more seasoned and experienced you will start to become much more aware of the time you are investing into projects versus what money you are making out of those efforts.
Email marketing is the same, it's important to keep track of the time and effort you are putting into creating your email content and weigh it up against the income you’re actually making from them. Finding the financial sweet spot comes with time and experimentation with your list. Sometimes it’s worth writing a daily email while other times it may be more financially rewarding with a weekly email while throwing in the occasional limited time offer....you will find your own rhythm.
So in summary, begin by creating a schedule that works for you. Set those all important expectations with your readers right from the start. Tell them how often they can expect to hear from you in your welcome email (Day 3 - The Welcome Email https://my.wealthyaffiliate.co... ) which goes straight out to them on sign up. Then as you establish your mailing frequency and start writing emails, always give them a taster of what’s coming. Tell them to look out for your next email coming on X day and not to miss it!
I will wrap it up here for today. I hope you have found some value in today's post and I welcome your thoughts and feedback below.
Tomorrow I want to chat about a contentious subject area...when's the right time to start selling to your members?..so you don't want to miss that one!
I will leave you with today's thought....
Get out there and enjoy your weekend!

Thank you for the insight. I really like the email schedule suggestion. I know personally how easy it is to be turned off by the relentless stream of emails - especially when they all hold the same content! I will definitely be keeping your post as reference.
Morning Julia, I know what you mean...we tend to get saddled with lots of emails received within an area of interest which more or less the same regurgitated content. That's why it pays to be different and there is no better way to achieve this than to just be your beautiful, unique and authentic self. Glad you are finding my posts of value. Have a wonderful day :)
I guess the important thing is to make sure that everyone on your list at least knows when to expect your emails. Thanks Anthony.

Hi Jerome, totally agree...we all like to know what to expect, most of us want clarity...and hate surprises. Hope you have had an enjoyable weekend :)
Hi Rebecca, no worries...this is something that you will want to get into at a later date. Hope all going well for you so far. Have a great weekend.
Best to experiment with different release times of different emails. Depends a lot on niche and audience!
Hi Michael, yes absolutely...experimentation and tweaking is a vital part which is tailored to meet the specifics of your own niche and audience. Hope you are enjoying your weekend thus far. Have a good one.

I don't think I could do email marketing. I hate all the emails I get everyday peddling the same thing. I don't want to do the same thing. I've started using social media to connect - it feels a bit detached. A bit less invasive of a persons privacy as social media is public. What do you think? sylv
Hi Sylvia, great question. Email marketing has gotten a real bad rap over the years. Back in the wild west days when there was little regulation or governance it was used and abused by a certain few. As of the most recently reported period (Statistics Portal), spam messages accounted for 56.87 percent of e-mail traffic worldwide. The majority of this spam is still perpetrated by just a handful of individuals. Putting that to one side, we as individuals are now heavily protected against unsolicited mail. If you receive mail that you have not signed up to receive..you can report it and in all likelihood this can result in the perpetrator server being shut down, or them being banned by their ISP and in the most serious cases can result in heavy fines and actual prosecution. I belong to a handful of carefully selected lists and I thoroughly enjoy the interaction and services (and product offers) I receive from the list owners. You have got to remember that you as the individual are in control of this relationship at all times. If you don't want it..you can simply end that relationship at any time. So, as you can see I quite like email marketing :) Because it goes directly into an individuals inbox, it still remains the most efficient way to communicate with a signed up member. But, as our society evolves, social media has become such an important communication tool. Driven by a new generation whom have known nothing else..I feel that we probably are on a tipping point in our history where social avenues of communication will advance beyond recognition over the next decade. But I still think email will be here for a while yet :) So Sylvia..if you are still with me (sorry this went on a bit long)..I would recommend you tidy up your lists and take back control of your inbox. It can actually be a pleasant experience :)
Actually, that's just what I did today. Unsubscribing from those I had not invited and were not interested in. Yes, like you there are those I subscribe to that I enjoy receiving emails from and actually look to receive from. So yes, I do agree with that kind of email. Had forgot the difference. No, your message was not too long. You obviously feel strong about it and I concur. Thank you for helping to give me perspective on it :)
