The Welcome Email - Day 3
30 Days To Crush Email Marketing!
Day 3
The Welcome Email
Hello and welcome to day 3 of this 30 day challenge...it's a nice bright day here in the UK..I hope you are all enjoying your day so far wherever you may be :).
Last night I was planning what I wanted to present within this challenge over the coming month..and after chatting with some of you guys online yesterday...what you said has really resonated with me.
Many of us are starting from the stand point of none or very little knowledge of ever implementing an email subscriber list before. What was evident from my conversations was that there is a real need for a step by step guide to the actual technical steps required to set one up.
When I first had the idea to start this challenge a few days ago, It was predominately to explore tips on how best to approach list building and to present strategies to build better customer relationships. It was not meant to be at all techi in nature!
In light of the conversations I had yesterday I have decided to compliment this challenge with an additional 30 day step by step training guide which will concentrate on the actual technical tasks required to set up a real email marketing subscriber list. I will start work on creating the content for it over the coming weeks and publish it under training section within the WA site once completed.
I will develop it to take you by the hand and walk you through all the technical stuff such as setting up a real campaign, creating thank you pages, setting up google analytics to track your stats etc etc.
So keep a look out for it....I will get to work on creating some quality content and also some step by step videos and I'll let you know once it is ready to be published.
So, for now...relax...back to this current Challenge! (A tech free zone)
After spending the day yesterday exploring our goals, I feel today is time to get our hands more dirty.
We’re going to start with a look at our most read email (although we don'y often realise it) - the welcome email… the first email your subscribers receive, right after they sign up to your offer and/or website.
Chances are this is the one email that we don't put a lot of thought into. We tend to set it up when first creating our offer and then abandon it to time and never revisit it. I know that I have been guilty of this in the past...you may be also!
Since it’s our most read email we need to review it often. We must continually check to make sure it is serving the purpose for which it has been written.
I cannot stress enough how important this seemingly innocent email is..it can do all sorts of things for you and your business. It welcomes your readers, introduces you to them and it sets expectations for what’s to come and what your new subscribers can expect.
My advice is that you don't ever try and start selling to your list straight away...it is proven to take at least 7 emails before a customer will trust you enough to want to buy from you!
Find or create a free product or resource that offers your member great value. Promote it in your welcome email and on the Thank You page that email subscribers land on right after they sign up to receive your emails. By promoting the same product in both these places, you greatly increase your chances of building a strong initial alliance of trust with your new customer.
For example, if you’re building a list about driving traffic to a blog then your opt-in could be about 3 ways to use social media to grow your audience and your traffic. Then why not follow up with a product such as a short guide on using Facebook ads or leveraging Pinterest to increase visitors to your site.
What I will say is....see how easy it is to start thinking of email addresses on a list in terms of numbers rather than actual people!
...always remember that every person who joins your mailing list is a human being with feelings, wants, dreams, needs and real life aspirations...and we are privileged to have them on our list.
Build their trust by providing tremendous value...build a real relationship with your list over time...don't rush it!
So here’s what I want you to do now. Go find your welcome email and review it.
If you haven't already got one...take a moment to research an opt in offer relevant to your website...and then write an email to promote it.
Use the following pointers:
- Is the email subject line interesting enough to make people want to click and open the email?
- Are you introducing yourself and your brand in the email?
- Are you setting expectations for the type of emails they can expect and when they can expect them?
- Do you have an offer in your email that’s converting well?
I think that is enough for today....tomorrow I want to talk more about what it means to engage with our subscribers.
I welcome your comments and feedback below...
I will leave you with today's thought...
Have a great Tuesday...see you tomorrow

Hey, Anthony, it's me again just crushing all yours posts into one having just started today. I only have one post on my website plus my about me page. So I don't think I'm up to creating an email responder yet, - am I? Sylvie
ps - How can you say its a nice bright day here in UK? - and in October! It must be very cold right now. You need to return to warmer climates, ha ha ha.
Hi Sylvie, I appreciate you crushing through my posts lol...I need all the support I can muster! Weather update for today is once again bright and sunny..albeit a bit chilly here in Norfolk UK.. I do miss the sunnier climbs..but have always loved the seasonal changes that the UK bestows upon us. In regard to your question on creating an email responder...it possibly is a little early to be concerned about creating one. That's not to say you can't...but investigating the possibilities for future deployment is never a bad thing. This present challenge is more creative than it is technical, so a gentle introduction.
Thanks, Anthony, I like the creative challenge that's what my present site is all about in a way. I'm a very visual learner and i love your illustrations both in word and image. Quality images, not just sparkly things [I paint - not just walls haha, but oils and watercolour. Love it. Hubby goes fishing - boooooring though i do love to eat it, so I paint or write now. Ray my hubby and better half - well most of the time - loves the cooler climate. He's an English man through and through. In fact, we are so different we were greatly warned not to marry by our closest friends of high respect. Anyway, I digress. Yes, I like your style so I will be reading your posts with eagerness. Thanks, Sylvie
Hi Sylvie, looking forward to visiting your site when you have it up and open. I have a little confession...I am a fisherman too :) Sounds as though Ray and I would have a lot in common lol. It sounds as though you were wise to ignore the advice given by your closest friends! I've also been given some pretty rotten advise by close friends over the years. Looking forward to your thoughts and feedback over the coming weeks. Glad you are enjoying my posts so far.
