WordPress 4.8 Has Exciting Widget Updates
I've just installed WordPress 4.8 Beta Version on my test website.
Warning: Do not install a beta version on a live site
WordPress 4.8 is due to be released on Thursday 8th June 2017 and it comes with some exciting widget updates (among other things).
New:
- Image widget
- Video widget
- Audio widget
Updated:
- Text widget - add formatting, bullet points, numbered lists and links. All without coding or copy and paste.
Before you update your website make sure you run a complete backup Training: Full Backup With a Plugin just in case anything goes awry.

Themes don't change the way WordPress works, they just change the look and feel of the website. So changing your theme should not affect your widgets.
No, theme updates don't affect anything that's a core part of WordPress. Some themes add extra widgets but most widgets are part of WordPress itself. Updating your theme or plugins should not have any affect on the new widgets.
