Themes don't change the way WordPress works, they just change the look and feel of the website. So changing your theme should not affect your widgets.

No, theme updates don't affect anything that's a core part of WordPress. Some themes add extra widgets but most widgets are part of WordPress itself. Updating your theme or plugins should not have any affect on the new widgets.
