Technology's 18 Months Rule

One of my geek offline friends tells me that whatever technology you buy, within 18 months you'll be able to buy something twice as good or half the price or both.

About 18 months ago my grandson bought a 128 GB USB flash drive for $10. Like WOW! I thought that was big.

Ever since then every time I go into a stationery or tech shop I've been looking at the flash drives but haven't found anything with that sort of capacity under about $75.

Fast forward. Last night my grandson told me I could get a two Terrabytes flash drive cheap so I put the app on my mobile phone.

I found the flash drive for $24 including postage. Thinking that was USD because the company is in USA and just about everything I buy online is USD I did a quick calculation of converting to Australian dollars. At the current rate of about $1 USD = $1.24 AUD I added 25% and came up with $30. And, I figure it's a business expense and my PayPal business account has some USD, I was happy about the price. So I bought it.

Today I got the payment advice from PayPal. It was Australian dollars not US. So $24 AUD.

The app is called "geek" and it's free from the PlayStore or Apple's AppStore. No affiliate links here :)

Enjoy!

P.S. Due to popular requests I'll write another post after I receive it and test it thoroughly.

Hi, Marion, it seems to be across the board when it comes to electronics and technology, a buyers market if we know where to shop thanks for sharing that app going to check it out.

Thank you for this info

Hi Marion, it does pay to shop around. Irv.

I'm a bit skeptical. In your post you said three terabytes, but on the screen shot is says 2T. Also, what is meant by 16G-2T? Why does it give you a range? If you can find a real 2T thumb drive for under $1500, let me know.

It's good to be skeptical. The 2TB version was $5 cheaper. I figured for an extra five bucks I'd get the bigger capacity.

16G-2T means 16 GB RAM and 2TB storage.

Give it a month and I'll have the 3TB version in my hands.

Amazing how fast the technilogy is growing. Where will it be in 10 or 20 years. Crazy good stuff.
Thanks Marion!

They have some pretty good deals at Geek and not just with electronics. I have bought a couple of things through this app as well. Got a Blue tooth keyboard for my Samsung tablet and a dash-cam for my truck and a drone to horse around with and it was all in Canadian dollars.

I had an issue with one of the items I bought and they refunded the full price AND I didn't have to return the item. It would have cost me more to return it than the item was worth.

The say they have your back and so far that seems to be the case.

I think that the only issue I have is the amount of time it takes for purchases to arrive from overseas. You being in Australia, you might get it faster.

It generally takes around a month to get anything from overseas :( That's the downside, but the upside is how much I can save.

Yea that's a rule my dad taught me. It was even the same 30 years ago, though the time frame may have been longer.

Know that that is a USB 3.0 not a 2.0. That's a good deal regardless. I do have one external hard drive that is a 3.0 that only works on my new laptop which is the only one that has a 3.0 USB port. I could install a 3.0 but I am not sure I can make it run as fast as a 3.0 runs.

Fingers crossed that it will work with my computer. I thought they were backwards compatible.

Sounds good. My Samsung 3.0 connector it's too big to fit in the 2.0 slots. Maybe I have a special port or something. I think I have a 3.0 extension lying around in the office somewhere. I think I'll try it.

Maybe there's an adapter.

USB 3.0 is backwards compatible and has improved data transfer over USB 2.0 plus it can transfer in both directions at same time.

I hope none of these are knock offs Marion!

I'm not buying a brand name so I know the risks. It looks like a really good deal.

I have to check it out. Thanks
