Why would I use Amazon Smile at .5% commission when I could use Amazon affiliate links that pay 4-8% commissions? Also, can I use a general Amazon affiliate link and encourage

How about using a general Amazon link rather than a specific product link? Can I encourage my viewers to save my Amazon link as a favorite? Is this against Amazon policy that you know of?

Don't tell your visitors to do anything. But write your content in that way so that visitors will like to click the links or pictures of your content linked with Amazon affiliate link. Once they click, even they don't purchase items that time, but again come back and open same device and purchase the same item even directly opening the Amazon website, then also you will get credited for that because Amazon saves cookies in the browser of each visitors who click the affiliate link of Amazon.
And I prefer Amazon Affiliate links over Amazon Smile because I simply earn more from Amazon Affiliate links than from Amazon Smile program.

Amazon Smile donates a portion of the consumer's purchase to a charitable organization of their choice. Therefore, they give them the option. I am not sure how or if it has any effect on what an affiliate gets paid per sale, though.
