All About Virtual Assistants

Many solopreneurs work the way they do because they want total control over all aspects of their business (See Gerber's business roles - Manager, Entrepreneur & Technician). But many of us cover all these roles because we love the challenge and the variety they entail. Then at some point we realize that this no longer makes good business sense and we look for help that is manageable and affordable. All About Virtual Assistants (VA) is provided to give you an overview that should help you decide whether it's your time to hire one.

Some of your peers can also be virtual assistants here.

I actually hire my sister to write blogs when I don't have time :)

Family or friends can work surprisingly well, especially if you have similar writing styles.

We're fortunate because we do have similar writing styles and similar ideas so it's not hard for her to understand what I'm looking for, I think it's a great arrangement :)

That's a clever trick.

I think people sometimes hate on the idea of outsourcing so much that they underestimate the benefits. Realistically, outsourcing can save you time and sometimes that's critical when running your own business.

Perhaps one of the most important things of having a business (online or otherwise) is time management and recognizing the value of your time. Outsourcing is sometimes a way of saying that your time needs to be spent on different tasks, ones that are more complex.

I agree, I'm actually working on another site for children and all of the writing will be outsourced to my sister and my nephew's wife, they have 3 kids, who better to write about the subject. Plus one will do the writing in English, the other in French so we're aiming for a bilingual site, this way we can all profit and I can continue to do my studies here at WA. Have a great weekend :)

Happy to hear many of us have found just the right VA

Outsourcing is great as long as you can afford to pay for quality :)

Yes, I emphasize "affordable"

Well, so far my experience with VAs was not really great. I am sorry to say that. I had 3 or 4, and nobody really took care of the site. They didn't even update wordpress, ever... let alone SEO all thing which I begin to understand since I am here.

Heidi, I have learned that it's so important to be clear in writing what the expectations are.

This is why our knowledge is so important so that we know what to ask for.

Exactly. I didn't know what to ask, in what terms and where to check. Now I know better!
Thanks for replying LowellAnn

I think many of us do fall into the trap of assuming that we should do everything ourselves. Realistically though, our time is valuable and there are often tasks that don't require a lot of expertise but take a considerable amount of time. Hiring a VA could be one answer or even just hiring a freelancer, depending on the task at hand.

Good point about time management.

Never do a $10 task when you make $100. I learned that early on in my career, and have been outsourcing for almost 20 years. Thanks for sharing.

Such good advice
