Newbies: Back it Up!

Hello everyone!

Today was a very tough lesson for me. My site crashed and I now find myself in a position to where I have to re-create the entire Website. All I have left is my theme. I have been working with Site Support all day to try to get this back but to no avail. They have done all they could and I am grateful that they tried & did what they could.

Up to this point in my learning here at WA I have been so focused on following the lessons and getting my site to look just the way I wanted. I was getting there!! The site looked good - to me anyway. I still don't know why this happened. All I know is that when a person is doing something they've never done before... they don't know what they don't know and sometimes they find out by these little life lessons.

Yes I'm heartbroken and disappointed - how in the world do you recover ALL of the Content when something like this happens?? I'm just going to do the best I can & get on with it. It'll be fine... just another lesson.

Good bye for now. I sure hope this helps someone out there avoid the same thing!

Have a great evening!

Oh dear, that should not have happened.
All of our websites are supposed to be backed up daily?
Have you contacted Kyle or Carson, as if you have not deleted the content yourself, this should not have happened at all!
What was site support's answers as to why this has happened?
This is very worrying!
Cheers, Tosh :)

I did not think about contacting Kyle or Carson. I believe this had something to do with a Plugin - Contact 7 form that I had JUST installed... I had no issues before that & the site went down nearly immediately afterward.

My intent for this post is certainly not to worry others but to create awareness about the importance for each of us to make sure we are pro active in maintaining our sites - as much as we know how. I will contact Kyle & Carson. Thanks for that suggestion!

Site Support worked on this for most of the day before they finally suggested I rebuild from scratch.

No worries at all.
Thanks for the information.
Many thanks, cheers, Tosh :)

Gee, I just joined today. Reading your blog fills me with concern and worry.

Hi Amber,
Thanks for checking out my blog. I think you will find excellent training here at WA and I think you'll be happy here. I just thought I should pass along my experience in the hope that it might help others avoid the same mistake I made. This is a FANTASTIC forum with SO many kind people that are available to help with your questions no matter what time of day or night it is. Although I learned a lesson the hard way it hasn't changed my thoughts on the great people here or the Excellent quality of training. I'm still very committed to WA and highly recommend it!

That sucks. I thought our websites were automatically backed up every day on the WA servers? That's what is claimed in the specs for hosting here.

Hi Darren,
Thanks for checking out this blog. I was hoping to pass along some important information & a little lesson I learned the hard way, to others that are new here like I am. I surely didn't want to create doubts. I'm still a BIG fan of Wealthy Affiliate and I'm certain that there is much quality content they have to offer here.

I thought he sites were backed up as well but I believe that the problem occurred when I installed a Plugin - I believe that we should back up our sites prior to installing any Plugins in case something like this happens.
I didn't know that at the time...

There are multiple training lessons if you search Backup

It's been a good learning experience for me for sure...

Hi Lissa, so sorry to hear that this has happened to you. I know it feels like a disaster, but if it was going to happen..it is better that it has happened at the early stage rather than when you were further progressed. Just remember, Back Up, Back Up and Back Up...and that goes for anything digital..photos or websites etc. One thing that you can try if you haven't already, most web pages that are published on the web get cached at some point by the bigger servers. Try visiting http://www.cachedpages.com/..enter your URL of your site and you might get lucky with an image of your old pages. Good luck.

Thank you!! I was able to recover at least two pages of content that I printed!! Unfortunately I have already started fixing the site and some pages reflected those changes but SO happy to have recovered SOMETHING! You are my HERO of the day!!
I sure hope that someday I will be able to help others just as much...

I agree as well that it's good it happened this early in the learning. Something I will not forget from now on. Definitely not the worst thing that's ever happened to me. It's just a thing... I can fix this and really no harm done.
Nobody got hurt but if I ever do meet Murphy he better watch out!!!

That is good news..at least you was able to retrieve a little of your content. I know the pain as I had a site that I had built up over 5 years..and my host provider wiped it by accident. I had a backup but when we tried to reload it we found it was corrupt! So I lost about a years worth of content on that occasion...it was tough. Needless to say, I back up my sites daily now :)

Oh that must have been excruciating!!! I think these hard lessons are the most vivid memories... we learn sharply & quickly! Ouch!

Thanks again for the tip on the cached pages. Was nice to see my work...Funny how I could get so attached to it!

Wow, hope you can get something going with a new one.

Yep... working on it this evening. Just a little set back is all. Very disappointing this morning but all in all happy to have learned this lesson early on!

Thats a shame, good to here you are continuing on with this lesson under your belt. Good luck.

Thank you! A valuable lesson learned and happy to have learned it sooner rather than later!

That's a calamity indeed. However when you restore it I'm sure you will feel the result is even better than the original. Creativity works that way.

Thanks so much for the encouragement! It was very disappointing this morning but a valuable lesson learned. I will carry on and get it all together again...hopefully as you suggested - even better than the original! : )

Ouch! One must be vigilant. Murphy will spring upon you at the worst moment. Hopefully all will be restored back and better than before.

I don't like Murphy! LOL! It's all good, it's just a thing. I can fix this.

Sorry to hear that. HOPE you manage to retrieve it somehow

Thanks but Site Support worked on it all day and finally told me I have to start from scratch.
Sad face. : (

I liked what I had!

Oh well it'll be fine... after I get caught up again!
Thanks for reading the blog... I sure hope it helps to remind others!
