Changing YOU for I

I just wanted to write a little bit about what I am learning. I know that if I teach or write about something I will learn it better. I am taking a course teaching me how to facilitate a life skills course for the Navy. It is very interesting and I am learning more about myself. So we have to change the way we speak in there to say "I' instead of "you". Here is an example:

You know how all those people don't learn anything because they waste so much time. CHANGED

I know that I don't learn anything because I waste so much time. See what I am talking about. Another way it works for me is that I have to be aware of how I am speaking to the group. I can't tell them what to do, just have to teach "self examination" I am really liking the class and learning a lot. I plan to write more about this subject and more, and I hope that you find this useful for yourself in some way. Please let me know what you think. Thanks for taking the time to read this :)

"I" statements are very powerful when using them on yourself. Saying "you" when you are talking about yourself, separates yourself from the situation or what you are saying, if you follow me. Sounds like you are undergoing some amazing thought/word techniques.

I am and loving it! One of the things I have to do is "coach" those in my class to use I statements and I have a hard time hearing them because, for so long I've used them and have heard them. I look forward to continue to work on these :) Thanks for taking the time to read and comment!

The part about using your own experiences and shortcomings is a good tool. But when I write I just put down what comes naturally. Later I reread it and fine tune as needed.

But I don't want to get tangled up in complexities during the writing process. for me it would stop the flow of thoughts and ideas.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment! I see that you wrote that you don't want to get tangled up in complexities during the writing process, I take that to mean that you like to write what's in the mind and then go back and make sure that it makes sense, I also try the same, sometime though, I just put the raw info out there and then read it later LOL

In narrative content I use "I,Us,We", In instructive I use "You".
I just don't have a choice.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment, and I understand what you are saying, It all depends on what stage or environment we are in and how we use words.

Hi Matt

That's interesting and it is absolutely appropriate for a life skills course. I'm a coach and that's something that I encourage people to do all the time.

Just be aware that when you're writing content for your web page (which is obviously a different context) - that actually you do want to use 'You' more than 'I'

Beverley

Thanks for commenting and reading Beverly, I am interesting in becoming more of a coach to people and even plan to start holding classes for others, in my spare time. I am really interested in learning more about helping people achieve their goals. My website is a coaching website, but I feel that it is still too broad, but I don't know how to narrow it down more. Maybe it doesn't need it. I look forward to learning more from you! Thanks!

Great to see that you are developing as a person. The initial stage of self development is basically analysing yourself and this is one of the best ways to do that. The next step will be more important because then you have to face the issues, accept them and then do something about them. I hope to see how you develop as you go through the course. Good luck and dig deep to see your faults as you see them, not others.

Thanks, I appreciate you taking the time to read and comment and I am looking hard at this personal development. My goal is to start helping others learn how to develop skills that will help them grow and succeed, so of course I have to learn about ME first, then I can help others. Thanks!

I really like that, I try not to useYou in conversations because it can come across as judging. so I use references of myself or talk in 3rd person if that makes sense. It's nice to know I'm kind of on the right track. Thx

In my opinion I statements make us look at ourselves and take ownership of the statement and also, the judgement is there in YOU statements and tends to cause friction, especially when people don't like to be told what to do. Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. Like judebanks says about marketing I have to remember that people that are looking at my websites they are interested in "WIIFM" or What's in it for ME, so I have to talk in the YOU statement. HAHA... fun to talk about thanks!

For self-development we need to look inward, so it makes sense to use "I". For marketing, we must focus on "You" and the benefits to the person receiving our message, in which case we use "You". In our every day lives, we sometimes project ourselves onto others and use "You" when we really mean and should use "I". Glad you're enjoying the course. ~Jude

Great way to look at it, thanks for taking the time to check it out and comment :)
