The Photographer...

A photographer makes images by recording light or other electromagnetic radiation, typically in a camera. A photographer may work in several different fields, often separate from other graphic arts such as designing, advertising, or working in video production.

The work of a photographer can be very creatively challenging. Their images are often shot from their own point of view. They use their own equipment or, in some cases, take very long angles and use a telephoto lens.

Because they typically produce multiple images of the same subject, they tend to be quite different from a typical photographer producing standard product images.

This field of ideas is called photography because it relies on human vision and imagination to create the final product.

As I've written elsewhere, Photography is Back. But how do you create a compelling photograph? In other words, how do you capture someone's imagination, interest, and emotion?

To understand how to create compelling images with photography, we have to go back to the basics of human visual perception, specifically our brains. Our brains are vast collections of circuitry that help us comprehend the world around us.

Visual experiences are also deeply tied to our identity. Our genetics and how we were brought up determine many mental abilities we have. Still, our imagination is also based on genetics.

Think of how we unconsciously imagine ourselves in a given situation and let our imagination help distinguish that image from another.

Creating images that excite, surprise, and persuade is a skill in its own right, but creating images that elicit emotions is an equally complex art. It doesn't just involve capturing people's feelings – it also consists in lingering over them.

It's not simply about choosing a good angle or lighting – when pulled from our own brain, our emotions also follow. Our emotions trained us to connect our experiences in the past to the feelings we see today. But it appears that our brains can only supply so much information about the world.
