"How much money." Blah Blah! Success doesn't always come that way!
OK, so maybe that was a little bit rude...and I apologize (I really am sorry). Still, if you're building an online business, you've got to look at it from another perspective:
If the one and only reason you're building a business online is to make money, your motivation probably won't last long. You're likely to fail.
Really. Take the time out, and think about something that you're passionate about. Your drive to succeed will last much longer on the online world; it will improve your quality, and quite frankly, that's the only thing Google wants, is quality...Google is the boss around here.
Love what you do, and do what you love.
I've just recently had a pretty big benchmark. Though I strive to be efficient, what little work I've put in has shown some results! I'm starting to actually pull people into my site. Also, I've desperately wanted to build a name for my website, Learn That Maths. Well, guess what, in the quoted search results, before, it wouldn't even pop up. Now, after videos and slaving away at posts, it's practically all I see on the first page of Google!
Now, my next benchmark is going to be to build this site out so much that it has to be recognized without quotes. I know it's going to take a lot of hard work, but I will get there, and I will be successful in that manner. I will help people with their mathematics, and I may even make a penny or two along the way! What's some of your goals? Doesn't everyone start a business to make money? Does anyone go into any sort of business not caring whether it makes money or not?
The answers to your questions is most of the time and sometime. That's why I said the "one and only" reason. It's hard to start a business online with only that in mind because many eyes are not trained to see the results, or benchmarks leading to good results.
Yes, making money will be an important driving force for your business, but that can easily die out when one is working their business for months, maybe even a year, and haven't made their first penny. That's why it's better to work a business with your passions in mind. That helps to create better quality for one (because now since the Google updates, if you're not pumping out quality, you're not getting rankings), and if you love what you do, then it'll motivate you even more to keep striving to make money until you see that result happen in your business.
For instance, I did not create my math website for the sole purpose of making money. I really do want to help people to learn math more efficiently. That is my driving point, since I am an educator, and I've seen it done wrong for years. The money will come, but that's my primary concern. Am I fortunate enough to not worry about funds? Of course not, but I know now from the training here at WA what success looks like, and have a general idea of when it's to come.

something like....help enough people to get what they want and you'll be successful yourself.
If one goes into business with money money money on the brain, they will likely fail.
If they go into business with a true aim to help people get what they want, then success is inevitable.
Affiliate marketing itself, through keyword research, is helping people to get what they want.
If I search on google for something ideal for a 10th wedding anniversary for my wife, and I land on your site which was on google's first page, and your website is all about ideal gifts for xxxxxx.....then you have a review on something awesome, I might just click on your link, cos I liked your review and wanted to buy from amazon, right away!
