Create a "Good" niche - Then Stick With It!

I see a lot of questions regarding whether or not your niche is good. If you enjoy your niche, if you like writing about it everyday (or at least 4 times a week), if you wake up thinking about it, go to bed thinking about it, or talk to your friends, family, coworkers, or acquaintances about it then you just may have a good niche! In that case then stick with it!

In the training you will see that Kyle speaks on finding that "good" niche. He explains that it needs to be something that you find interesting. That could be many things actually. It doesn't even have to necessarily be about something you already know, just something that you want to get to know further.

Example time!

My passion in this world, aside from my family, is being a geek. So let's define this.

Webster Definition:

- Geek:

  • : a person who is socially awkward and unpopular : a usually intelligent person who does not fit in with other people
  • : a person who is very interested in and knows a lot about a particular field or activity

If you take both definitions and roll them up into one it means that it's a person that is unpopular or awkward that is usually intelligent and doesn't fit in with others. However this person is very interested in particular subjects.

My personal website banner for Twitter, Google +, and Pinterest of justbeageek.com. Feel free to use my site as a reference when thinking about building your own niche!

Personally I'm EXTREMELY in to Sci-Fi, Steampunk, High Fantasy, Cyberpunk, and many other "Nerdy/Geeky" subjects. I take these interests and I turn them into something that I feel others would like to talk about. Because if you remember "Geeks" are unpopular and socially awkward, or if you prefer, introverts. These types of people like to reach out and talk but they don't want to be forced to. They want to scream their passions, but only to the ones that "understand" them.

So, what I did was I took this social awkwardness and developed a page that makes them feel comfortable. They don't "need" to interact if they choose not to but I do give them this option when they feel comfortable to do so.

All the while offering them a "safe" environment to "hangout", I give them articles, products, etc. to read up on. Which all of these contain either ads or links to things they may want to add to their life.

Now that you have a real life example lets get down to the process that I use when creating a niche. I have several on paper, literally. Just haven't taken the step to create them just yet.

Process I use to create my niche(s):

Step 1: Pencil and paper.

Take out the ye ole notepad and get ready to write! Start a track list of things you enjoy first. After exhausting that list start writing down things you are interested in learning. After you have about 10 of each, 20 ideas all together, start doing a pro's and con's list of each one your wrote. I know this sounds tedious and boring but once you see where I am going you will understand.

Step 2: Begin narrowing down.

Ok, now that you have your pro's and con's of each potential niche start knocking them off. Start with the ones that have more con's than pro's. "But Justin, I don't have any with more con's than pro's!" That's perfect! That means you have more to choose from! Start by taking each one and ranking them from most likely to interest you for a LONG TIME to the least. You may be surprised you are more interested in the ones that require you learning more than the ones you already know.

Step 3: Start building out your top 5 niches on your list, on paper.

You have your list. It's been analyzed and narrowed. Your goal now is to break down each niche to their sub niches. What do I mean by sub niches? What I mean is if you choose "Cars" then you need to dive deeper into this category so you don't overload yourself at first, nor your viewers, with information. Remember your overall goal is to draw traffic to your site with your niche and keep your viewers returning. You start small then build upon it so that you become the authoritative source for all information regarding to your niche.

Step 3 Example "Cars":

Say you really enjoy cars. You really want to either learn more about them or you already know everything that there is to know. Well your audience isn't going to bombard your website at first with questions like "Tell me everything about my car!" So, within cars lets dig down into the sub niche "interior". Within Interior there are even more sub niches. You could say stereo's, paneling, seating, etc.

We will choose stereo's in this case (because who doesn't enjoy a nice sound system?). Though we aren't talking about the whole sound system just the stereo. You can start to review, price, and link to stereo's outside of your site with affiliate links. Giving your viewers name brand options, honest opinions regarding your preferred choice for car type (i.e. truck, sedan, etc.), color options, and more. Within this sub niche is tons of information you could provide to show your viewers you are the "End All Be All" guru to car stereo's.

Step 4: Choosing the top niche!

You have now done a few hours worth of work, at least for me it took that long. Of course, I'm very descriptive and an analytical person but to each his own I guess Haha. I would choose the one that your heart and brain tell you is right. One that you know that you will enjoy writing about for a really long time without getting burned out on. Nor should this niche frustrate you with writers block. I've been going strong, personally, for several months without feeling mentally exhausted.

If you chose a niche that involves more learning, great! That just means that you will want to strive to learn it more, unless you decide what your learning isn't for you. In this case I would move to another.

If you chose a niche that involves everything that you know about a specific subject, wonderful! Always try to learn something new about it every time you sit down to work on it so it stays fresh and new for your viewers and yourself!

Step 5: Building a site around it.

You can do this using Wealthy Affiliates siterubix site building platform. Free users have access to this! So I would take advantage of it! That way you can "flesh" out the idea and see how you are going to feel about it. Just think, if you don't like the way it looks, neither are your viewers. Also you won't have to waste money on buying a domain just to figure out you don't enjoy what you are talking about.

Step 6: Progressive Analysis

Look over everything that you have completed so far. Take notes on what you could do to improve niche, visuals, posts, etc. Don't worry so much about making everything perfect but make sure it is enjoyable to you, and the ones around you.

Step 7: Ask others

Show off your niche! Tell everyone around you, that you know at least, to take a moment and look at what you have created. Gauge their interest. Ask them for comments or feedback so that you can get a better grasp of your approach. I recommend doing an impromptu survey of sorts. Ask them questions regarding the content, layout of the page, is it fun to use, did the content hold their interest, etc. I recommend doing this for a couple days as you add more content so that you can build a better site completely around your chosen niche.

Step 8: Decision

Make the final decision of whether or not you are going to stick with your chosen niche or not. After this process you should have only spent 2-3 days working on it. Trust me, it's not a waste of time to do this. You will have learned the process and will be able to fly through to final steps of your next one a lot faster. Before I settled on my choice I took a solid week of choosing, building, and asking others opinions before I landed on my final choice (That was the Geek website. Which was my second on the list).

In the end it's all about whether you are happy with your choice or not. Because the viewers will sense that when reading. They can tell a boring, mechanical post from one that is filled with passion. I suggest taking the time to really understand what you want it to be about. Don't worry about what will make you the most money, because in time money will come from your niche. No matter what you choose. There are viewers EVERYWHERE and I can guarantee that there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, that share the same interest.

I wish you all the best success in your adventure! If you ever have any questions please feel free to reach out to me at anytime or any of the others here at WA. I am far from an expert but I have learned a few tricks along my way.

Stay Geeky!
