Verbal Judo, the Martial Art of the Mind and Mouth, Chapter 10 Review
Good day WA Friends,
I am reading a new book by George Thompson and Gerry Jenkins called Verbal Judo, 2nd Edition, The Gentle Art of Persuasion. Here is my chapter 10 review.
Introduction
The big idea in this chapter is paraphrasing. "To paraphrase, put most simply, is to put another person's meaning into your words and deliver it back to them."
Two basic steps to paraphrasing:
- Sword of Insertion - an interrupting with Whoa, Listen, or Wait a Second
- "The powerful sentence that will allow you to interrupt anyone without fear of bodily har.,: 'Let me be sure I heard what you just said'"
Fourteen Benefits of Paraphrasing
Here are the 14 benefits of paraphrasing:
- by paraphrasing, you hooked the other person
- taken control of the conversation
- Make sure you are right on the spot
- If you have not heard correctly, you will be corrected if not
- the other person becomes a better listener
- Empathy is created
- Gained attention with the sword of insertion
- Paraphrasing becomes sonic intention because think they said something but really have not
- Paraphrasing is clarifying to everyone around
- Paraphrasing prevents metaphrasing - putting words into other people's mouths
- Allows you to ask for reverse paraphrasing - asking the other person to summarize what you have said
- Paraphrasing safeguards yourself from misunderstanding
- Paraphrasing generates the fair-play response provides an unusual psychological advantage
- Paraphrasing etches the facts into your mind
Conclusion
Paraphrasing is an important principle needed in your arsenal.
That is all for Chapter 10.
Have a great day!
Cheers,
Keith

So praraphrasing works both ways- makes you understand others as well as be understood by others. Quite powerful! It can give instant results in oral communication. In case of written words, may be it applies when the writer writes keeping in mind the readers and the suitable message.
