Working Hard or Hardly Working?

Hi friends!

I'm Katie - a mom of three kids, a dog lover, a deal seeker, and a pharmacist by training.

I've been a part of the WA community for less than 2 weeks and I have learned SO much. I, like some of you, am so over my day job and plan to build my affiliate marketing business into a full-time career. So, I'm using some time off work to try to get a fast start. Thank you to Kyle and Carson for providing the opportunity to do that!

Most days, I'm fairly productive. I'll do some research, write a post, and do a few trainings. I also give and request site feedback and site comments here (LOVE those features!).

But other days...I spend hours just plain ol' wasting time. Not on Candy Crush or anything like that. In fact, to the untrained eye, it might look like I am working on my business.

But people in the know would see me fiddling with Wordpress themes, changing banner pictures, creating logos, and making minor style edits to already written posts. (Exhibit 1: my recent collection of header images seen above.)

I may be new around here, but even I know that is not the best use of my time!

I used to do network marketing ... we would talk about "IPAs," which were unfortunately not delicious beers, but "income producing activities". They included things like calling or messaging people in your network, hosting events, and scheduling in-person meetings (hey, maybe for the other kind of IPA!).

IPAs are not usually the "fun" or "easy" things, like playing with Pinterest graphics or posting funny memes on social media. It's the WORK part of having an online business.

Fortunately, in affiliate marketing, I enjoy the IPA of researching, writing, and optimizing content, and ultimately, helping people find the information they need.

Yes, it may take some time for the "I" to start rolling in, but as long as I am working hard on the "P", I know it will come.

What other activities do you consider to be an "IPA" in affiliate marketing? I would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for reading!

IPAs will keep you focus on the right activities. Thanks for sharing. We will all bounce between the 2 states you mentioned in this business. I do, anyway...👌🏼

They do, indeed, Stanley!

Yes, we need to make a decision and we need to give up something to get another. Just see which one is more important to you and in your future!

That's exactly right. We all get to choose how to spend our 24 hours a day.

Hi Katie.
Great to meet a fellow pharmacist and I totally get what you said about being over your day job. Me too!
It's great that you can identify tasks which are actually IPAs and those which are just window dressing.
For me IPAs are researching and creating content and time spent on driving traffic such as social media sharing.

Good luck
Dave

Hi Pharmacist Dave! :) Thanks for the comment! It's so easy to get sidetracked and avoid the important stuff. But remembering the goal helps keep me on track.

Happy to connect here and wish you the best!

I have the issue of reading as many posts here and not working on my site. I have learned so much from doing this and will continue to do so but might need to cut back a little. Wishing you all the best on your journey here.

Absolutely. Great point. Having this resource is so helpful but it is easy to go down the rabbit hole and lose track of time. At least what you're reading here is probably relevant to your business, at least compared to watching silly cat videos and such. ;)

Thanks for commenting!

Cat videos can be helpful I think but they don't pertain to my niche site at all. I still like to read and learn things daily.
