What it takes to truly succeed [at anything]

It has been said, “The road to success and the road to failure are almost exactly the same.”

That is a very true statement when you break it down and really think about it.

The road above looks really similar. It goes around the small mountain the same, one path on one side and one on the other. The difference is on what is beyond the horizon—beyond what we can see. Perhaps the right side is fraught with peril. Maybe the road just hits a dead end. We don’t know.

The road on the left could be just as perilous, but maybe on that side there are some rest stops or places to get refreshment. There might be a kindly sage along the way that can offer advice to help us get through the tough times.

In building our businesses, we don't know what lies ahead just beyond the horizon. It could be smooth sailing or it could be storms aplenty. We don't know if we will be successful or if we will fail. From where we are standing both roads look the same.

To be successful at building our business or at anything else, I believe we need at least three things:

  • Planning
  • Perseverance, and
  • Patience

There are obviously other things, but without these three I just don't think it is feasible to believe that you will become successful at anything.

Planning

Planning or setting goals is of vital importance.

I am writing my Super Affiliate Challenge blog on financial healing. One of my recent posts was about budgeting—which is a form of planning.

Without planning or goal setting how do we know where we want to go?

If you are going on a Sunday drive for fun, you might just jump in the car and go. But you can't treat your business like a Sunday drive.

If you want clear direction—or at least as clear as you can have—you need to plan and set goals.

Perseverance

According to the dictionary, perseverance is: steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.

As we build our website business or any business or anything, perseverance is necessary for when the times get tough. There are going to be days when nothing seems to be going right. There are going to be days when we just don't "feel" like doing what it takes to make it through the down times.

Obstacles can get in our way. I get very discouraged when I work hard and cut calories and carbs and still don't lose weight. Does that mean I should just give up? No. I need to press on and not give up so that I can achieve my goal of losing weight. I might lose pounds the next time I step on the scale. I may have made a sale the next time I check my website. I may have helped someone solve a problem.

Without perseverance, we won't make it. It is a must.

Patience

This might be the most important of all. Without patience—without that ability to wait and work through the waiting time—we might never know how close we were or are to meeting our goals or overcoming that obstacle that has kept us down.

Patience is that sometimes illusive ingredient that is lacking in many a would-be-entrepreuner. We want success—yesterday!

Having patience to work and wait for that success isn't easy. We want things now... I want things now! It's hard to work through the slow times.

I was talking to a friend's mother the other day and she was saying that her daughter had made $10 a day for three days. I told her that was great! She disagreed with me and said she didn't see any future in that.

I told her that it was a start and that great things start small.

Great things do start small and they take time to grow. With the right ingredients, we can succeed at anything. In my humble opinion, the most important ingredients are: planning, perseverance and patience!

"Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it."

Let me know what you think in the comments below.

Karin :)

Hey Karin. I've been on a diet now for 2-3 months have lost like 5 kilos. Well all i do is go for a 3 mile walk and most of the time i'am sitting in the PC. Im on a vegan diet (almost). If i get my hands on a treadmill i could do some running too haha. Well I'm 30 years old (if that matters i don't know- my father says younger people lose weight faster). If this helps, so be it ! If it doesn't, I will try better next time haha!

I think I am one of those people who the more they try to lose weight, the more they gain!

I need to get out walking agAin. So hard this past winter with so much snow and slippery streets.

      No excuses now tho!

      Best wishes,
      Karin 😊

I walk in my house in the hall quite frequently haha

      Karin,
Fully thoughtful, as always. Patience is my biggest problem. I'm better at it now that I am older. Patience is a necessity when Arthritis refuses to let you move as quickly as you used to.

I remember when I was in bible studies and prayer studies, someone would always say that we should pray for patience; to which someone would always retort, "Be careful what you pray for, you just might get it."

Patience is a difficult characteristic to obtain. And it is absolutely a necessary ingredient in order to reach a successful business.

I struggle with patience all the time. When I did ask for patience, I got married to someone with kids! Let me tell you, you either learn patience or you spend a lot of time away from home!

Seriously though, patience is really hard for many people. I keep wanting my little plane to move down...it's still at 300...I want every single page I write to rank on Google, Bing and Yahoo...I want to lose 100 pounds and I want all of these things YESTERDAY! LOL

      Working on it, though!

Impatiently waiting for patience to arrive,
      Karin :)

      Excellent post Karin.
Patience and perseverance are difficult when you don’t see results but deep down we know you are correct.
      Thanks

Agreed! Still would like them to both be a lot easier!

      Hi Karin!

Of the three, patience, or the will to wait, is a problem for some people. In our instant gratification world, people want it now. And of course, our online businesses do not always work that way when just starting out.

I find that people that have a paradigm that is built with poor self-confidence, lack, and poor results from past efforts, they have trouble being patient through this process.

Their paradigm does not allow them to believe that they can succeed. When people get started in WA, at the beginning they see possibilities based on someone's sales job, but over time their self-talk becomes, "Oh this probably won't work," or "this is too much work" etc.

Re-program the paradigm and the results will come because patience will prevail. Bob Proctor has great material on ways to change the paradigm.

I see so many people who suffer from low self esteem. It is easy for me to recognize it because I was once a chronic sufferer, too. I am still an occasional sufferer, but it has become much better over the years.

Bob Proctor has great info. I appreciate The Secret, although some of it seems far-fetched, it is certainly a way to view things in a different way. Thanks for reminding me of this.

      Best wishes,
      Karin 😁
