SUPER Goal Setting
Everyone—well, not everyone, but a lot of people—talk about goal setting. They talk about setting S.M.A.R.T. goals. They talk about setting easy to manage goals. They talk about setting goals that are impossible to accomplish.
Well, today, I want to tell you about my own version of SMART goals. It is called SUPER Goals and incorporates a lot of the theory behind the many types of goal-setting techniques already in place but has a slight twist on them.
S-Setting
The first part of the SUPER goal setting matrix is SETTING. Yes, as simple as it sounds, the first part is setting the goal. It should be simple because, let's face it, when we overcomplicate things they don't get done. Or, they get done halfway. You can use whatever method suits you. I do like the S.M.A.R.T. goal way but sometimes that can feel a bit overwhelming.
In case you are unfamiliar with SMART, here is a brief explanation:
- S=Specific
- M=Measureable
- A=Acheivable
- R=Relevant
- T=Time Bound
If a goal doesn't have those elements, it is probably more like a dream than an actual goal.
So set your goals using the SMART method.
U-Unique
For me personally, a goal needs to be unique to me and not generalized. We are not sheep when it comes to our life and the goals we hope to accomplish. While we can look at examples, if the thing doesn't work for you, don't put it in there!
I know we sometimes have no idea how to express our goals, but if you have a thought about something you want to do—write that. It doesn't have to be fancy and, in fact, should be as plain and simple as you want it to be. I have noticed in my experience, that people tend to make things complicated and then they don't want to do it. Keep it simple but uniquely yours.
P-Personal
This goes hand in hand with Unique.
You are writing this goal for you, not for anyone else! If you spell something wrong—who cares? It is your goal. As long as you know what you mean, who really cares? You might. Then fix it and move on toward achieving the goal. Ultimately, your goal(s) are yours. You are the only one who needs to see the goal...write it out to suit your needs and wants.
E-Engage
This step is where you take active steps to achieving the goal. You engage in what you need to do to see the goal(s) through.
This is the hardest part for me. Actually getting active in what needs to be done to meet the goal. Instead of saying, "Wow, I created this awesome goal," it goes like this, "Wow, I have completed so many steps toward achieving this awesome goal!"
For me, this step is hard because it means I have to "do" something. I can't rest on my laurels or my rear end! I have to get down to the nitty gritty and do some work.
R-Repeat
Nothing too mysterious here, Once you get done with one goal or set of goals, get started on the next one(s)!
If you don't have any new goals. Then get busy! I find it very hard to believe that most of us budding entrepreneurs only have one or one set of goals!
So what are you waiting for? Get busy! Set those SUPER goals and achieve big-time!

Thanks, Myra. Things are going very well. I have been super busy building out my blogs and writing books. I have several classes I am engaged in to help me write and sell more books. It's been stressful but good!
I hope all is well with you, as well!

Hi Karin!
It's great to see you back in the saddle, so to speak.
Thanks for sharing! Yes, these are great reminders of the need for setting S.M.A.R.T. goals. I have used that for years.
I had a friend tell me today that I needed to write out my goals. They are in my head, but I need them on paper so I can go over them daily!
Thanks, Howard. I have been super busy getting my book series written. It's a work of fiction so it does take considerable time to come up with my characters world and actions and speaking and... Well, you know... LOL
