Building A Support Circle
I was listening to a year old podcast, that was buried in my email, that I hadn't gotten around to listening to since it was broadcast last January. It is about having a clear vision for your new year and the 5 pillars to a successful business and life. In it, Natalie Sisson, the founder of SuitCaseEntrepreneur.com talks of the power of having a painted picture of the vision you want around you, and one of the questions she poses is, "who are the people you want to have around you?" And it got me thinking about how small I have let my social and support circle shrink. That I have been spending far too much time alone and not reaching out.
What I came up with was to go through my phone book and Facebook friends and create a small list of people, (10), that I admire and consider are seemingly "living the dream." They may be people I know well, that I work with, or they may even be people I have not even met personally but are friends through Facebook. But they had to be people that I like, and have an energy that is healthy and one that I would want to be around. Once I had my list, I sent a message out to each of them sending a "hello" and let them know that they had crossed my mind and I hoped they were well. The response was that of them being touched and two asked if I would like to meet up for a lunch or something. I didn't tell them about my little circle, but will when I am across from them. I have two lunch dates scheduled now!
My goal is to have a small circle of powerful people that I can connect with and be accountable to outside of W.A. as well as those that are here supporting my journey. I felt good about this little project and make a commitment to reach out daily to at least one of them on a daily basis.

I am actually going to start a local meet up group for entrepreneurs here in the near future. Great idea and nice post. Thanks Julie. :))
Sounds like a plan! I've been a member of a small group of female entrepreneurs for years now and it really helps.
It is easy to find yourself isolated even if you had no intentions for that to happen; life happens! Good for you that you are self aware and you reached out. I would not be surprised if you find out one or two of your ten were/are in the same place as you. So, I think you will find that in looking to meet a need that you had you are doing a service to others as well.
Wow, I really like this! I really like the fact that you look for people with a healthy energy. This is definitely a place with SO MUCH positive energy. One of the reasons why I decided to stay and become a premium member. Great article. Thank you for sharing it.
I listened to a CD while driving today. It said to surround yourself with people that will support your dream and those that you wish to be like and can learn from. Stay away from the negatives. So, you're on the right track.
