Online Business is Just Like Weightlifting

One of my New Years Resolutions was to achieve a body weight power snatch. At my target weight that would be around 80kg.

I've been going to the gym for over a decade and I'm fairly proficient in regular strength training. Including the powerlifting exercises squat, bench press and deadlift.

But Olympic weightlifting is something very different. It's very skill based. It's humbling. You think you are strong, but your strength is useless because you lack the skill.

It occurred to me online business is a lot like weightlifting. Let me explain.

1. It's almost impossible to learn without training

Weightlifting is very technical. It's very hard to learn how to do it without somebody teaching you.

You can kind of understand how the movements are performed, but you will have a very hard time to try to learn them on your own.

Online business is exactly the same. You can kind of realize how a successful online business works, but you will have a very hard time completing all the right steps to get there without training.

Fortunately we have an excellent step-by-step training here in WA. I wish learning to snatch was as simple.

2. You have to start light

When you start training weightlifting, you will start with a broom handle. You will get very comfortable with the broom handle before you even think about using the barbell.

If you can't perform it with a lightweight, you can't perform it with a heavyweight. Period. And if you can't perform it slow, you can't perform it fast either.

It's once again exactly the same with online business.

You can't take advantage of advanced marketing techniques or create professional level writing or videos before learning the basics.

Your first blog post will be fairly awful, as will your first YouTube video, as will your first snatch.

There's no way around it. You have to start light and work your way up, while honing your skill.

If a succesfull online marketer would give his/her business to a complete beginner, do you think they would know what to do with it to keep it succesfull?

Of course not. It takes years to build the company and the skills needed to succeed.

3. Progress takes hard work and determination

Once you have the basic movement patterns down in weightlifting and have built sufficient strength base, the real work is only beginning.

Once you are through the beginner phase in weightlifting, you will have to work hard and consistently to add weight to the bar.

Every new personal best will be a struggle that requires you to face your fears of going under the heavy bar and to endure the pain and discomfort.

Once again, online business is just like that. You go through the training, you learn the basic skills and think you have it all figured out.

But this is where the real work just begins. You will have to write when you really don't feel like it. You will have to at times to force your self to solve that annoying technical issue, or to create that sales funnel etc.

You will have to get over the fear of failure and get out of your comfort zone to see real success. In weightlifting, in online business, in life.

Have a productive day!

P.S. I hit 50kg today. 30 to go!

YES, Jukka! We need to bulk up the weight on our websites to help make a stronger business! I'm SLOWLY getting started on that grand endeavor! Great post, and enjoy your Sunday, my friend!๐Ÿถ๐Ÿ‘

You know what. It would be much more fun to try and increase the snatch while bulking up but I'm losing weight at the same time. It's really not fun but I know it will pay off in the long run :D. But I'm definitely going to bulk up my site!

It's already Sunday evening here so I'm going to write a couple of comments and then take a couple of hours to relax before hittin the sack. Have a good one Jeff!

You always have such inspiring allegories!
