Focused Niches Make Monumental Differences
Humble Beginnings
I made many sites over the course of my life. The first when I was only in the third grade. It was the late 90's and a simple landing page that has text and a background image (I think it moved too). It amazed my class that I owned a website on the 'world wide web'. I was hooked.
Since then I have had many sites with various niches. None of which I enthused me to write on the subject. My main website was just a dumping ground for anything I wanted to write on. As you can guess this was a poor move. But somehow, maybe the sheer time it was up, it gained domain authority.
Big Overhaul
Recently I made the move to change it to a niche site on what I love and have a lot of knowledge about. Yup, blogging. This over crowded niche was why I never revamped my main site or started a blog in the niche. I thought it was to competitive, and I was right.
But none of that matters! It's the right niche for my knowledge and passion. It has not even been a full month yet since I mass deleted posts I considered off topic (I'm talking hundreds). Over the past twenty some days I've been writing new posts on topic and going through old ones. These old ones are being updated and extended to contain more information.
Bigger Results
I posted a quick updated here at WA when I saw Google Search Console telling me I was getting ranked sixth for the key-phrase "how to start a blog". It floored me! I could not have picked a more competitive niche and I am ranking in less than a month. (Though I could not repeat the results, Google still said so! You can read about that here: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/jrswab/blog/ranking )
This goes to show everyone that staying focused on your niche, making sure you are passionate, and know what you are talking about, will lead to great things. I can't imagine what my site will achieve six months from my huge site revamp.
Glad to be back and able to share this with you all. You are my internet marketing family and I wouldn't want it any other way! To all of our success!

Hello jrswab!
Great article. Thanks for thereminder about the necessisty of remaining true our niche. You have accomplished much. Thanks for sharing.
Totally agree and, fortunately, I do. Another very competitive niche (watches), but am enjoying the challenge!
From the hordes of us who didn't know a niche from a hole in the wall a few weeks ago...we really hope that pursueing a niche on which we're passionate authorities also works for really obscure niches that are also overcrowded. I thought Rainwater Harvesting would be weird enough that I'd have space to fumble my way into learning this business. but turns out there are some really good rainwater websites out there. So I compete with the pros. Oops. That's life, I guess! At least I know and like what I'm doing.... :-)
Great to hear it's going so well for you! It definitely does make a difference to stay focused on what we post on our sites. Plus, it helps to go back over some of the older stuff we have on them and update things a bit.
I've been doing that with one of mine, adding more content and rewriting some older posts...some of them I've got to wonder why I left them like I did back then, lol.
Keep up the awesome job!
Best wishes :) ~Sherry
You're absolutely right about focus. My sites are both focused around food and healthy eating. I've garnered a large following and, by adding specialized pages for celiac and allergies, as well as vegetarians and hunters, I just saw my readership rise by about 20%. So focus is a must in my eyes. Well written.

This is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been stressing about my niche ideas because I always feel the competition will be too high. But I've been hearing that competition isn't necessarily a bad thing, and you just confirmed that. I'll stick to what I'm passionate and knowledgeable about and success will find me!
Good call! Another thing I've learned is if a niche is not competitive there is probably no money to be made there.
