I had had the dream for a while. Saving wasn’t easy, but I had managed to actually put the whole money together and buy my ticket to Europe. I had bought the ticket before getting my passport. The process of getting it was something I despised somehow. I just couldn’t believe I had to fill out all of those forms and actually wait weeks before the passport could be issued. I was resisting it even though it meant my goal would finally meet completion.

I see that today and just can’t believe I got frustrated just to get my passport. The issuing of documentation could flow more easily, but I realized it wasn’t a problem of an objectively complicated process of getting some legal papers. The feeling was one that had accompanied me for ages. If hadn’t had the ticket already I might have just abandoned the whole thing. I sort of believed that anything that requires a process and some waiting is something I shouldn’t have to deal with. I expected things to be easy.

There is plenty of literature in the self-help world and more particularly the new age type that encourages you to feel deserving of great things. We all definitely want more in all areas of our life. I want to address, however, a particular kind of deserving that is more harmful than beneficial. It has to do with a sense of entitlement and/or self-importance. Keep reading...
