D-day operation
Tomorrow will be an very tense day for me and my family because my mom will be going through an operation to remove a lump on her pancreas.I have been reading up on cancers lately and found out that pancreatic cancer is actually one of the toughest ones around.
It is going to be an major operation lasting 6-7 hours involving stomach, intestines and gall bladder. The doc might not even be able to remove the lump if more cancer cells are found to be already spread to other parts of the body.In this scenario, the patient will have less than a year to live.
If the lump can be removed successfully, it will be brought for further tests and determined if my mom needs chemotherapy after the operation. If the results are good, no further treatment is needed and that is what my family are praying for.
The scenario that we do want is that the test results are negative and further treatment like chemotherapy is needed.Only 30% of the patients in this scenario survive beyond 5 years.
Yes this is the cruelty of pancreatic cancer, I suggest that regular body check ups are very much needed.80% of the patients in this case are detected too late and even can't attempt at an operation to remove any cancerous lumps.
My mom is very lucky to be discovered at the early stage and I pray that this good luck will be with her throughout the operation and her road to full recovery.
